(photo/Pat Bolen) LUCAN — The Lucan Irish split two games last week as they were blanked 7-0 at home Oct. 31 by the Mt. Brydges Bulldogs before edging the Central Elgin Express 4-3 Friday. Mt. Brydges has a record of 14-1- 0 for first overall in the league and in Lucan Oct. 31, the visiting Bulldogs showed why. The Bulldogs took control in the first period with three goals and never looked back as they cruised to the 7-0 win with four power play goals. Lucan was outshot 29-23 by the visitors and went zero for nine with the man advantage. The Irish visited the Express Friday night and were down 2-1 after one period with Tyler Medd getting the lone goal for Lucan on a power play. Two more Lucan power play goals from Nick Engel and Drew Henry in the second was the only scoring in a 3-2 Irish lead going into the third. The Express tied it at 13:49 but Engel's second goal of the night at 18:12 proved to be the winner for Lucan. The win gives Lucan a 6-6-0 record as they host West Lorne tonight (Wednesday) at 7:45 p.m. before visiting Lambeth Sunday, also at 7:45 p.m. Hawks drop two EXETER — Five minutes were the difference for the Exeter Hawks Friday night in Thamesford as the Trojans scored three goals in the last five minutes to tie the score before winning 7-6 in a shootout. In Central Elgin Saturday night the Hawks suffered a 6-2 loss, despite outshooting the Express by a 50-39 margin. Hawks coach Deryk Howard said going into the game against the Trojans, who have a 10-3-0 record, he would have been happy with a point. "But seeing how well we played for 55 minutes...it was disappoint- ing to come out with a loss." The Trojans drew first blood against the Hawks Friday night with Jamie Jongsma getting the only goal of the period before a wide open second period that saw the teams combine for six goals. The Hawks climbed to a 3-1 lead in the second with three goals in three minutes from Scott Muirhead, Jake Jeffrey and Troy Elder but the Trojans responded with a pair of their own to even the score at three. Muirhead's second of the period gave the Hawks a 4- 3 lead going into the third period and Jeffrey extended the lead with two more in the third for a 6-3 Exeter lead with five minutes left in the game. But the Trojans roared back with three goals just over a minute apart, including two more from Jongsma to even the score at six and send the game to overtime. "They started to play more physical," said Howard. "And they generated a few penalties and they put their power play to work." After a scoreless extra period, the teams went to the shootout which saw the Hawks and Trojans each score twice in 10 chances before the Hawks missed their eleventh shot and Adam Mueller finally put the game away for Thamesford. "We wanted to improve the second time around against them and we did," said Howard. But he added that Saturday's game in Central Elgin was a disappointment. "We got outplayed." Although the Hawks were short players with injuries from the Thamesford game, Howard said the Hawks will have to rebound from its losses better. The Express took a 2-0 lead in the first which includ- ed a power play goal before extending their lead to 4-0 in the second which included a shorthanded marker. Jacob Schmidt finally got the Hawks on the board at 8:28 but the Express made it 5-1 before the period was over. Central Elgin extended their lead to 6-1 with another power play goal before Schmidt added his second of the game at 10:55 to finish the scoring at 6-2 for the Express. The Hawks outshot Central Elgin 50-39 but went zero for seven with the man advantage. The Hawks are on the road again this weekend when they visit Mitchell Friday night at 8:30 p.m. and Mt. Brydges Sunday at 6:30 p.m. "They (the Hawks) looked like they were ready to break out of their shell coming into the weekend," said Howard. "Hopefully, it's just one week postponed." .1 IRONWOOD GOLF CLUB Gold medal — On Friday, the South Huron District High School Junior Boys volleyball team fought back as the underdogs to win gold in the Titan Classic Central Elgin volleyball tournament in St Thomas.
