The Times Advocate, 2007-11-07, Page 1616 Times -Advocate Wednesday,November 7, 2007 Young retires as executive director after 30 years CLINTON — After 30 years at the helm, Jean Young is retiring as execu- tive director of Town and Country Support Services. Town and Country is a Iiome and Community Support agency in Huron County providing programs including Personal Support and Homemaking, Respite, Home Help and Home Maintenance, Transportation, Meals on Wheels, Seniors Dining, Seniors Exercise, Lifeline - Emergency Response System, Friendly Visiting and Telephone Reassurance. The agency also provides personal support and homemaking services in Perth County. The agency began in 1978 in Wingham when it was determined that an association would help to bring together homemakers working in Huron County. Young, the late Betty Cardno of Seaforth and other interested citizens met and together founded Town and County. In that first year the agency served approximately 500 clients. By comparison, in 2006, the organi- zation helped more than 4,000 people in Huron and Perth counties - helping seniors and frail elderly, disabled adults, children and families with essential daily care and health pro- grams. Young notes, "In my 30 years with Town and Country we have experi- enced some amazing and rapid changes as more and more people want to 'Age at Home."' The Town and Country Support Services board of directors has announced that Mary Atkinson has been named as the new executive director. Atkinson comes to Town and Country Support Services with over 30 years experience in both healthcare and business consulting. Atkinson's most recent position was with a community health services agency as a Business Unit Leader and so has a solid understanding of the community health system. She is a registered nurse with over 20 years experience and has a B.Sc. in Biology and an M.B.A. from the University of Ottawa. Atkinson notes, "I am very excited to be a part of such a wonderful organi- zation as Town and Country which has been built on solid communal founda- tions for the community by responding to the needs of the community. Jean Young's contribution to her community is inspiring - she is an icon. "I want to continue to build on Town and Country's grass roots foundation to become the model of excellence for delivering an integrated system of ser- vices that address this community's support and health services needs for the long term." Earlier this month Young was hon- oured for her contribution on the provincial scene by the Ontario New director — Jean Young, executive director of Town and Country Support and Services, left, and Cecil Pepper, president of the board of directors, welcome Mary Atkinson, centre, to the agency as the new executive director.Young is retiring after 30 years with the agency and a celebration in her honour will be held Saturday at the Betty Cardno Centre in Clinton.
