So often the accomplishments and good deeds young individuals perform are overlooked and under acknowledged. So quick we are to dismiss the young as frivolous. The Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards are here to ensure young people are recognized for their contributions. This recognition can help kids realize they are making a difference in their community, and by celebrating it we might inspire a lifetime commit- ment to community service. As your local newspaper, we are proud to offer the 2007 Junior Citizen of the Year Award so we can rec- ognize the outstanding contributions and achieve- ments of young people in our community. Any Ontario resident aged six to 17 is eligible to receive an Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Award. Please help us by nominating an individual in one of four categories: • A person involved in worthwhile community ser- vice. • A special young person contributing to their com- munity while living with a physical or psychological limitation. • An individual who has performed an act of hero- ism in the past year. • Good kids who show a commitment to make life better for others and do more than is normally expected of someone their age. Co-ordinated by the Ontario Community Newspapers Association and supported by TD Canada Trust, this program recognizes all young people nomi- nated for the award — each nominee will receive a certificate of recognition from their community news- paper. Up to 12 of the nominees and one group will be cho- sen as the final recipients of the award — a plaque citing their accomplishments, a Junior Citizen lapel pin, and a cash gift — which will be given during a ceremony held in the spring of 2008. Nominations will be accepted until Dec. 28, 2007. Forms and further information can be obtained at our office, online at www.ocna.org, or by calling the OCNA at 905-639-8720, ext. 228. Help us praise those young individuals who make a difference in our community so they will prosper tomorrow. CAN You SHOW METhW?y J TO ENLIGHTENKrir To A MAJORITY,,. Let them have their day Once again on Sunday, Canadians will stop what- ever they are doing at 11 a.m. and for a few min- utes, will be united by one thought and one goal in remembering those who served the country. But the men and women who survived the horrors of war as well as the enemy of time and the apathy of the country they served for decades are facing a new enemy. Because this year, when heads are bowed for a moment of silence, the notes of "The Last Post" drifting over Cenotaphs may be drowned out by the sound of cash registers and Christmas carols. Because the veterans are in danger of being run over, figuratively and in some case literally by the Christmas industry, which like a lab experiment that has over- grown its cage, has pushed out past the limits of December, through November and into October. Trying to get the jump on each other earlier every year, retailers have pushed the start date of the silly season up to the point that this year, Halloween dis- plays competed for space with the first trappings of Christmas. The first ads have already annoyed us and the first Christmas Tree has already pushed its way up through the floor of whatever green hell it lives in into a local business. Credit should be given to towns such as Lucan and Zurich which have resisted the urge to start the shopping sprees earlier and opted to keep their Christmas parades within the traditional month of December. But it will be hard to find a moment this weekend for quiet reflection in Bayfield, which has officially jumped the Christmas Shark this year with its Nov. 9-11 `Christmas in Bayfield' events complete with a Christmas tree lighting Friday night and the Christmas Parade on Saturday. As the Bayfield website says, "Sunday Medway Madrigal Singers. Be sure to visit shops and restaurants which will be open offering refreshments and treats." It is ironic that Remembrance Day is threatened to be ground under when the profile of the day and veterans in general has never been higher. For decades, Nov. 11 and veterans languished almost in obscurity but as the ranks have grown thinner, the desire of the veterans to share their sto- ries and the wish of Canadians to honour the sacri- fice and service has grown and the day has been given its proper respect. It shouldn't be buried under tinsel. PAT B BACK 40 VIEW OLEN Classified Rates Word ads: $12 for 20 words, 20t for each additional word+ GST.
