Smart Meters?
Suppliers of electricity and natural gas have for some
time advocated the use of programmable low voltage
thermostats for controlling heating and cooling in
homes. Homes that have utilized these thermostats are
able to reduce the amount of energy they purchase even
though they have the same rate structure as other cus-
tomers.
Many electrically heated homes and apartments have
baseboard and cable heating with possible seven or
eight high voltage thermostats per unit. These cus-
tomers with the same rate structure, will have a slightly
higher consumption for heat than the customer with
programmable thermostats.
Conversion to the programmable thermostats would
be very expensive for some customers. With the instal-
lation of `Smart Meters' these previous billing costs will
substantially change.
The home or unit with the program-
mable thermostat, provided it is
utilized properly, may quite pos-
sibly continue to use the same
consumption as in the past but
may purchase some of the ener-
gy at the reduced rate. In
our municipality, 90 per cent of
apartments have baseboard or cable
heating and most likely window air conditioners. Most
of the apartments have eight or more 230 voltage
thermostats for heating.
It is apparent that prior to `Smart Meters' the cus-
tomer with programmable thermostats have a small
advantage over the residential customer with baseboard
heaters. However, with the installation of `Smart
Meters' they will have a major advantage with controls
that allow ease in setting programmable thermostats for
heating and cooling.
The customers with baseboard heaters must set and
reset each thermostat for five days each week and must
be available to do that. This will be quite confusing for
seniors and if customers do not adjust the thermostats
and assuming the `Smart Meters' were installed to
reduce load and not to extract more revenue during the
peak periods, however this will be the result.
Sometime ago I discussed this with a supplier and
made them aware that for some customers (such as
baseboard heaters) it is not a fair method of selling
energy.
Suppliers have been very quiet regarding `Smart
Meters' so one must assume this has their approval. If
you are confused regarding how you can use `Smart
Meters' to your advantage, call your supplier for advice.
