(pho- tos/Scott Nixon) 7-2 win for rookie Hawks over Sailors By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF GODERICH — The Exeter Hawk rookies put on a strong show Friday night in Goderich against the rookies of the Junior C Sailor team as the Hawks came away with a 7-2 win. The teams lock up again tonight (Wednesday) in Zurich at 8:30 p.m. Exeter coach Deryk Howard said after the game tonight and before the Hawks go to Wingham this weekend the team will be making cuts. "We'll have probably 21 to 22 players, 23 players tops that we'll take to Wingham." Howard said for tonight's game the Hawks will have some of their veterans as well as newer players "We'll see how everybody looks together and then go from there." Another addition to the team as trainer and assistant coach said Howard, is Steve Bedard from Hensall. "That's been nice,"said Howard. "He knows some of the play- ers up that way and he's coached minor hockey around there." Exeter general manager Dennis Pfaff said while the team invited 45 players from South Huron to the camp, it has only received replies from two, although Pfaff said local players are still more than welcome. Pfaff added the Hawks, who he said went to London for their first practices because there was no local ice available, have had good interest from other organizations including the Huron Perth Lakers, Zurich Minor Hockey and the Bayfield/Clinton/Hensall Minor Hockey Association. The Hawks resume tryouts Sept. 18 at 9 p.m. before their first game Sept. 21 when they host Thamesford. Jets make changes for fourth season By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF LUCAN — The Lucan Ilderton Jets opened their 2007/2008 tryouts Sept. 4 with 29 skaters and general manager Rob Andrews said the team will have a new look this year with sev- eral veterans not returning and a new coaching staff. The Jets received tragic news recently with the death of play- er Roy Davies in a car accident Aug. 25. Davies was a three year member of the team and his life was celebrated Sept. 3 by 1,000 people at the Lucan Arena. "There are big changes this year," said Andrews with sev- eral players who have been with the team from the start not returning including Shaun Fairweather, Darrel and Tim Parsons, Steve Matthews and Mark Phillips. Behind the bench as head coach for the Jets this year is Rick Pickel who will be assisted by John Mead and Paul McTaggert. "I'm excited about the new look we're going to have," said Andrews. While goalie Marc Williams has retired, Andrews said Dave Riddel will return and the Jets have added KJ Robinson from Ailsa Craig. "It's hard to say how we'll do. We have a lot of new faces and it will take a while probably for all the guys to get to know each other," said Andrews. Two new teams have been added to the WOAA senior league this year with the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks and Shallow Lake Crushers playing in the northern division. Lucan-Ilderton is in the 'D' division of the southern conference with Thedford, Exeter, Clinton and Tavistock and plays each of the teams four times as well as a home and home with Lucknow, Goderich, Milverton, Monkton and Wingham for a total of 26 games. The playoffs will run the same this year with the top four teams heading directly to the 'AA' and the rest of the conference playing for the 'A' title. "It will be tough," said Andrews. "Every game means some- thing... it should work out really well for us and Exeter playing two games against each other in our home barns, it's going to be good." The popularity of the senior league is shown, said Andrews, by the continued expansion. "The league is just getting better and bet- ter..The quality of play- ers coming to our league is increasing every year." "That's what the WOAA is about. It's about homebrew hock- ey" TJQLIM LE V011'11 I:0MM ,. Friendship • Fun • Exercise Ages:4 to 18 ( with 4 age divisions) Season: Sept. 5, 2007 - Apr. 2008 capproxsowks) Registration: Sept.12, 2007 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Town & Country Bowling Lanes in Zurich.
