Bluewater moving ahead with emergency plans By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF VARNA — The Municipality of Bluewater is moving ahead to comply with provincial legislation on emergency management, Chief Administrative Officer Lori Wolfe told council Monday night. Wolfe said the municipality has been non-compliant in the areas of training and in the conduct of an annual exercise but the two program elements must be met in 2007 and plans are under way to achieve the regulations. Emergency Management Ontario field officer Steve Beatty was at council Monday night and said emergency management is always changing. Beatty told council that without its support, emergency man- agement wouldn't happen and that any of the councillors might have to fulfill the mayor's responsibilities in an emergency. Wolfe said the municipality will perform a table top emer- gency exercise in October that will allow Bluewater to meet the minimum provincial standards and qualify it for funding to assist with buying emergency equipment. Council then passed the updated emergency management bylaw. In other business, roads and property manager John Graham brought the results from a tender put out on a sidewalk plow. During budget deliberations council approved the purchase of a 2007 utility tractor. Graham said the tender came in at $119,244 with the tractor being $91,257 as well as attachments that include a snow plow attachment for $7,353; a V plow attachment for $3,933; a sweeper broom and water tank for $8,322 and a salt and spreader including dump body for $8,322. Graham said while the budget for the tractor was $80,000, after Bluewater gets its GST back it will be paying $112,968. With lower prices paid on tenders for a pickup truck and tractor loader, Graham said the municipality has a surplus of $34,700 in the roads capital vehicle budget that can be put toward the tractor. ford.ca Built for life in Canada Wednesday, September 12, 2007 Times–Advocate 3 Partners in Learning GRAND BEND — Partners in Learning will kick off its fall pro- gram with an open house today (Wednesday) from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Southcott Pines Clubhouse. They run for 10 weeks from Sept. 26 to Nov. 28. Other courses starting in January will be on researching inventors and their inventions, as well as the history of immi- grants to the area and a course on solving mysteries. Correction Statistics included in the Times - Advocate's Aug. 29 back to school safety page were incorrect. Rick Donaldson of the Ontario School Bus Association reports there have only been seven crash - related fatalities involving school buses in Ontario in the last 19 years. Eighteen -thousand buses in Ontario travel two million kilome- tres every day in Ontario carrying 800,000 students with 300 million safe rides a year. The Times -Advocate apologizes for the error.
