(photos/NinaVan Lieshout) Wednesday, August 29, 2007 Mohawks taking to the ice EXETER — The Exeter Mohawks will play their first game since folding over a decade ago Oct. 8 in Exeter against the Lucan Ilderton Jets. Behind the bench as head coach for the Mohawks will be Mark Livermore. The Mohawks will open their training camp Sept. 10 in Exeter at 8 p.m. as well as Sept. 14 at 8 p.m., Sept. 20 at 9:30 p.m. and Sept. 24 at 9 p.m. with their final time Sept. 27 in Huron Park at 8 p.m. Mohawks team president Todd McCann stated, "Mark comes to us with a lot of expe- rience, both at the junior level with the Exeter Hawks and with the Clinton Radars of the WOAA senior league. He won a championship as a player with the Hawks, another as an assistant coach and in the three years he was the head coach in Clinton with the Radars, took them to the finals twice. With his knowledge of our team, the league and the town of Exeter, we are very excited to have him on board." McCann added Livermore will be announcing his assistant coach shortly and that Jason Geoffrey will be the Mohawks general manager. Hawks getting ready By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — A core of around 10 players from last year's Exeter Hawks were joined by a large group of potential Hawks last week as the 2007- 2008 Exeter Hawks hit the ice for the first time in London. Head coach Deryk Howard said the numbers at the first skates for the Hawks have been excellent with around 35 new players looking for spots. "It looks like we're going to have a really solid defence...we've got a lot of talent up front but I haven't really decided where to put it and what to do with it," said Howard. The team is back on the ice tonight (Wednesday) at the London Ice Park at 7:30 p.m. before starting tryouts in Exeter next week. The Hawks will be at the South Huron Rec Centre Sept. 4 at 9 p.m., Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. and Sept 11 at 9 p.m. The team's first exhibition game is Sept. 9 in Goderich versus the Sailors at 4:30 p.m. with a rematch in Zurich Sept. 12 at 8:30 p.m. The Hawks will be in Wingham Sept.14-16 and resume tryouts Sept. 18 at 9 p.m. before their first game Sept. 21 when they host Thamesford. Exeter Fury get a win and a tie EXETER — The Exeter Fury played two games last week and came away with a tie and a win. The Fury played host to America on Aug. 22 and came away with a 2-2 tie. Exeter, playing with a full squad for the first time in several games, showed they were ready to play from the opening whistle. A few minutes into the game, they nearly got on the board when Shawn McFalls drifted a long shot over the keeper's head, only to have it go off the crossbar. Midway through the first half, Joe Forrester sent Craig Docking a pass and Docking found the lower left corner to give the locals a 1-0 lead. That lead was short-lived howev- er, as America tied the game when their striker was left open inside the box. Corey Firth almost put Exeter up once again, but narrowly missed a chance when he pushed his shot just wide of the near post. In the second half, Exeter had its chances once again, but could not capitalize. America took a 2-1 lead midway through the half as their player cor- ralled a crossed ball and made no mistake in depositing it behind Fury keeper Ryan Masse. The Fury pressed for the equalizer and were given a free kick from out- side the 18 -yard box. As America was setting up a wall, McFalls took a shot which caught the visitors off -guard and tied the score at two. Exeter continued to press, but were not able to gain the victory. "This was a total group effort," stated McFalls following the game. "We played hard from start to fin- ish and were unfortunate that we didn't get the result that we deserved." On Sunday, the Fury traveled to London to face the Renegades, a team they tied earlier in the season. This time, the Fury came to play and left with a 3-1 victory. Playing with just one substitute and without their regular keeper who was out with an injury, Exeter came out strong. Craig Hern sent a long cross into the box and Stu Parsons' shot was blocked, but Pete McAllister was there to fire a shot into the top right corner to give Exeter a 1-0 lead. The Renegades tied the score a couple of minutes later when they connected with a head ball from a corner kick. Craig Docking almost made it 2-1 Exeter, but his shot hit the crossbar. In the second half, the Fury defenders stepped it up and limited the number of scoring chances by the Renegades. McAllister notched his second goal of the game when he took a shot from the right wing and it somehow eluded the Renegades' keeper to give Exeter a 2-1 lead. Late in the half, makeshift keeper McFalls threw a ball to Firth who ran up the wing and fed a pass to Docking who made no mistake in sealing the score at 3-1. "We played a great game and it feels good to be back in the win col- umn," stated McFalls. "The defenders really played well, especially Hern to protect both myself and Ryan Ralph (who played net in the first half)." The Fury are now off for a couple of weeks and return to action on Sept. 12.
