The Times Advocate, 2007-08-29, Page 1010 Times -Advocate Wednesday, August 29, 2007 Higher student attendance for ARCA events By Nina Van Lieshout TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — Over the past few months the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) Education Department has kept busy with various special events, sit- ting on many boards and commit- tees for special events and festivals and preparing for and carrying out nature programs and the Sylvan Conservation Program. ABCA conservation education spe- cialist Julie Hicks presented a con- servation education update Aug. 17 at the monthly board of directors meeting, saying, "Throughout the watershed, we have accomplished both an increased environmental and conservation awareness through curriculum -based conserva- tion education programs and special events." Several conservation education events were held for students in the Exeter area, featuring Spring Water Awareness Program (SWAP) which saw the ABCA Education Department visit 13 schools with a total of 1,842 students. "The main message of SWAP is to educate watershed students about the winter and spring dangers per- taining to frozen and flooded water- courses," says Hicks. The March Break Day Camps were also a success, with 28 chil- dren participating in the two camps which featured "a winter scavenger hunt, creating animal tracks to take home, a birdhouse craft and an ever -popular discovery hike for win- ter critters and animal tracks," says Hicks. The Huron -Perth Agriculture and Water Festival was in April. Grade four students from Huron and Perth attended, learning about the importance of water and agricultur- al resources through hands-on activ- ities. A total of 712 students participat- ed in the festival. The Huron -Perth and Southwestern Envirothon was also another success, with 130 secondary students, in teams of five competing in several areas, featuring wildlife, aquatics, soils and forestry. The Sylvan Conservation Program, held over six weeks, brought out nine bookings in the spring. In total 206 students partici- pated, including students from Hensall Public School, Stephen Central and St. Boniface. The Spring Nature Programs were also popular, bringing out 558 students between January and June. Students participated in several programs, including Eco -hikes, Fossils and Puddles and Pollywogs. "The education department has continued to work towards the Authority's objective of building bet- ter environmental conscience thus far in 2007," says Hicks. "Throughout the watershed, we have accomplished both an increased environmental and con- servation awareness through cur- riculum -based conservation educa- tion programs and special events," adds Hicks. The only area Hicks is hoping to improve is adding snowshoeing in the wintertime, saying the students will enjoy that experience. On Sept. 10, the Fall Nature Programs will begin.
