Students need
backpacks
By Nina Van Lieshout
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
HURON - With only two days before the backpacks
and school supplies are collected, the Huron United
Way is struggling to meet the needs of the community,
with over 100 Huron County children and teenagers
on the list and only around 30 backpacks collected.
The third Annual Giving Back Pack program is hop-
ing the communities in Huron County will step up and
donate back packs and school supplies, making the
school year easier for students not having any back
packs or school supplies.
Huron United Way executive director Kimberley
Payne says there is a real need for backpacks for high
school students specifically, adding that South Huron
is also in dire need of more donations, however she is
pleased with the donations that have come forward.
"Last year about 60 per cent of the students came
from South Huron, that were not on assistance," says
Payne.
"Many families manage the day to day needs of rais-
ing a family, but when August comes and they face
the extra demands of new clothes, school supplies and
increasing school fees, it can be a huge financial and
emotional burden," she adds, explaining, "Kids need
the right tools to be successful in school. This program
provides those tools and helps smooth that first month
back to school so they don't feel different or discrimi-
nated against. Most of us have memories, especially in
high school, of not fitting in."
Families on the lists are those who are usually fac-
ing financial stress due to unemployment, illness or
unforeseen challenges.
Exeter and area residents wanting to drop off back-
packs and school supplies must do so by Friday at
4:30 p.m.
Backpacks can be dropped off at the Exeter T -A on
the Main Street of Exeter.
In 2006, over 100 backpacks were distributed, with
the majority of requests for high school students need-
ing scientific calculators, math sets and more durable
backpacks for the bigger books.
"The demand far exceeded the donations and United

LUCAN — Tony Demas, owner of the
Wilberforce Inn on the Main Street of Lucan,
asked council Aug. 23 to waive or partially waive
a building permit fee for his restaurant.
At the Lucan Biddulph council meeting, Demas
explained he is planning to add a 900 -foot addi-
tion, arguing the $1,000 fee is "way too much."
Demas says he is a good business owner,
bringing people to Lucan and creating interest in
the town.
"I've done everything possible for the last few
years," says Demas, explaining some other
Lucan business owners don't even keep their
store fronts swept.
Demas says he's also written a letter requesting

his proposal, but has heard nothing.
Demas did say Lucan Biddulph clerk adminis-
trator Ron Reymer made a comment to him,
which baffled Demas.
Lucan Biddulph Mayor Tom McLaughlin
explained to Demas that since Reymer was not
present at the meeting, it was unfair to converse
without clarification from Reymer as to what was
