The Times Advocate, 2007-08-15, Page 23Wednesday, August 15, 21007 SPORTS Times -Advocate 23 Express win two EXETER — The Exeter Express played Friday in Forest in game one of their best of seven series in Forest for the league's 'B' championship. Exeter 10 versus Forest 4 The final score was not indicative of the intensity of the game, said team spokesperson Joe Fulop, who added he was proud of the efforts put forth by Exeter. Fulop said as an exam- ple Rob Burk had five stolen bases on the evening, including a steal of home, and pitched the first five innings keeping the Express in the game. Aaron Patterson was brilliant in the field, said Fulop, making 11 defen- sive plays, including throwing out a runner at home plate on a relay play from deep left field. He also had an unassist- ed double play to end the game. Fulop said Bobbie Grant was his usual stalwart self behind the plate and patched together average pitching performances from Burk and Dan Masse, keeping the Express in the game. Grant was also the recipient of the Patterson throw and blocked a pos- sible run from scoring before driving in the win- ning runs in the ninth inning. Fulop said Masse ranged from excellent to wild but stuck it out over the last four innings for the victo- ry and had two base hits. Adam Leppington and Lonnie Hawke each made tough plays look easy on the corners and made no mistakes. Hawke also had three hits. Vic Oliveira made an outstanding catch in left field to stymie a possible Forest rally. Doug Fairbairn took one for the team playing half the game at second base and the rest in right field. He also had a vicious single that started the Express rally in the ninth. Forest opened the scor- ing in the first on an unearned run. A Hawke single and a sacrifice fly by Oliveira tied the score in the second. A double by Patterson and another hit by Hawke keyed a two -run rally in the third. Forest replied with a run in the bottom of the same inning. In the fourth Burk sin- gled, stole second, went to third on a sacrifice by Oliveira and stole home easily. Forest tied the game in the seventh as Masse tem- porarily lost his control over his pitches. The teams were tied 4-4 in the top of the ninth when some extra effort and spunk showed through. Fairbairn had a single and a series of hits fol- lowed from Patterson, Leppington with a sacri- fice and Grant's key two - run double, plus singles by Masse, Burk, Oliveira and a walk from Tim Eifert. Suddenly the Express had a 10-4 lead. Forest loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning but Masse dug in and shut down the opposition with a game ending double play from Patterson. Fulop said the Express are the defending OBA 'D' champions and their willpower and execution of plays showed they have a chance to do it again. Game two: Exeter 8 versus Forest 4 Back in Forest on Sunday Fairbairn was able to patch together a solid line-up for the game. The Express were able to gain five runs in the third inning to take the lead and keep it. Terry Hogg pitched the first three innings allow- ing only one hit but wild- ness led to seven walks and two runs. Forest scored one run in the first and an unearned run in the third. The Express rally in the third contained a walk to Patterson and hits from Eifert, Grant, Hawke, Masse and Leppington. Forest almost caught up in the fourth inning as Masse, pitching after one day of rest, was rattled for two runs on three hits. The Express were able to put the game away scoring two runs in the fifth. Grant hit a long home run and Hawke had one of his two hits to key the rally. They scored their final run in the sixth as Eifert walked, stole second and scored on a Patterson hit. Leppington and Grant each pitched two innings to put the game away and each gave up one hit. Their services will need to be utilized in Wallaceburg on Labour Day weekend. According to Fulop other good signs were shown that the team is preparing itself for both Forest and later opponents. Veterans Grant, Hawke and Patterson had two hits each while Burk played with a sore back but was solid at second base. Outfielders for the day Masse, Eifert and Leppington looked strong defensively and each of them had one hit. And rookie Hogg chipped in with a hit, three innings of pitching and played a strong defensive game at third base. The series continued Tuesday night in Exeter after press time, and resumes Friday in Exeter at 7:30 p.m. It continues Sunday at 2 p.m., also in Exeter.
