The very young and the elderly are most at risk of
injury on the farm, however injuries can happen to
anyone.
PREVENTING INJURIES ON THE
FARM
Here are some general safety tips
to prevent the leading causes of
injury and death on Alberta farms:
MACHINERY INJURIES
• No extra riders should be
allowed on farm machinery.
• Obtain proper training for the
machinery you are using.
• Equip machinery with guards
and rollover protective structures
when appropriate.
• Do not adjust machinery while it is being
powered.
• Avoid operating machinery when you are
fatigued, distracted, ill, or have been drinking.
• Be aware of terrain to anticipate hazards that
might cause a rollover of machinery.
Farm Scifty facts
It is estimated that every year in Canada there are 130 farm -related deaths,
1,200 people are hospitalized from farm -related injuries, and 50,000 people
sustain farm -related Injuries requiring them to either seek medical attention
or take a day away from normal work activities. Of all agriculture -related
injuries, 65 per cent of fatal injuries and 50 per cent of injuries requiring hos-
pitalization are related to the use of agricultural machinery. The very young
and the elderly are at the greatest risk of injury on the farm.

FALL INJURIES
• Take care when climbing on and off machinery.
• Take extra precautions when you are using a
ladder or working on elevated platforms.
ENTANGLEMENTS
• Never adjust machinery when it is powered.
• Do not wear loose fitting clothing around moving
machinery parts.
ANIMAL TRAUMA
• Wear the proper horseback riding helmet.
• Learn how to properly handle and care for
all large animals such as cows and horses.
• Always have an escape
route planned when you are
working in a confined area with
large animals.
OTHER INJURIES
• Read and follow all instruc-
tions on the labels of chemicals,
pesticides, fertilizers and cleaning agents.
• Fence and enclose open water areas to prevent
drowning.
• Never enter storage areas where grain is
being loaded or unloaded, and never stand on
top of grain. If it begins to flow you can be buried
in less than ten seconds.
• Wear safety equipment and have proper training
for operating all -terrain vehicles (ATV's)

• Match children's abilities with agricultural job
requirements and always supervise children
working on the farm. Consult the 'North America
Guidelines of Children's Agricultural Tasks' for
specific gudielines.
• Older farmers should have regular medical
check ups for vision and hearing impairment and
should check with their doctor for medication
side effects that could increase risk of injury.
