Details of RMP at meeting
SEAFORTH - Approximately 300
local farmers attended a meeting
Aug. 7 at the Seaforth Community
Centre, listening to details about the
proposed Risk Management
Program (RMP) presented by the
farm leaders who have proposed the
program.
The meeting was one of three
across the province, with other ses-
sions in Finch and Chatham.
Chairman of the Ontario Grains
and Oilseeds Leo Guilbeault and staff
member Peter Tuinema presented
the details of the program as it has
been proposed by a joint committee
involving members of Ontario Grains
and Oilseeds, Ontario Federation of
Agriculture, and Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs.
The RMP is a price insurance pro-
gram designed by and for Ontario
grain and oilseed farmers nearly
three years ago. After many months
of hard work by farmers across the
province, a proposal for a three-year
pilot program of RMP has been pre-
sented to the provincial government
for approval.
"One challenge is that RMP will
begin for the 2007 crop year, but
most of us are still reeling from the
effects foreign subsidies had on our
prices in 2005 and 2006," says
Guilbeault.
The program is designed for a
three-way partnership. Farmers
would pay premiums, and it would
also require federal and provincial
dollars on the traditional 60/40 fund-
ing formula to be effective.
"We need to say thank you to the
province for coming to the table with
their share, and we need to remem-
ber this is only
40 per cent of
the program
until we can
convince the
federal govern-
ment to come
on board," says
Tuinema,
adding "Our
first priority is
in getting RMP
passed through
the McGuinty
government
before cam-
paigning begins
for the fall elec-
tion. Our sec-
ond priority is to
step up our
lobby with the
federal govern-
ment to achieve
companion pro-
gram funding
with regional
flexibility."
