South Huron Alliance for Retention and Expansion The South Huron Chamber of Commerce has been instrumental in helping the South Huron Alliance for Retention and Expansion (SHARE) program develop a Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E) project for South Huron. The goal of this project is to open the lines of communication among busi- nesses, local government, agencies, organizations and community mem- bers. The approach identifies current opportunities and barriers to expan- sion through surveys of local busi- nesses and uses the results to help SOUTH HURON create a long-term marketing plan for the community. The BR+E approach has been used in other communities and has had impressive results such as a more business -friendly atti- tude, increased economic competitiveness and more jobs. Research has shown that most new jobs (40-80 per cent) are created through the expansion of existing busi- nesses, so it is essential we nurture and support the businesses already in our community. South Huron's BR+E project is in the stage of analyzing survey data with results expected to be reported to the community in the near future. If you're interested in learning more about this project, contact the South Huron Chamber of Commerce at 235-4520. Huron Economic Development Matters The County of Huron, Huron Business Development Corporation and the Rural Economic Development Program of OMAFRA have partnered to launch "Huron Economic Development Matters." This three-year eco- nomic development initiative has three goals: to stimu- late new economic growth in Huron County, to encour- age the retention of youth and to create vibrant and sup- portive communities. Funding is available to groups and organizations that support projects in certain categories including business planning, youth skills, community economic develop- ment internships, business retention and expansion, downtown revitalization and community development. TRISTALYN RUSSELL PLANNING ASSISTANT POLICE BRIEF Group destroys fence GRAND BEND — Lambton OPP report that a group of revelers showed no regard for personal property after they ripped boards from a residence fence to fuel a bonfire on the beach. On Aug. 2, OPP were called to Beach Lane in Grand Bend, when it was reported that a group of persons at a bonfire on the beach were rip- ping wood from a fence to fuel the fire. When officers responded to the scene, the group scattered. Officers were able to apprehend a 17 -year-old male as he attempted to flee. Although it could not be proven that he was involved in the mischief to the fence, he was charged with trespassing and drinking underage. There is not an estimated dollar loss at this time. Huron Economic Development Matters is a great resource for local community groups and programs that require financial assistance. Applications can be submit- ted on behalf of community organizations, municipali- ties, or groups of people. For more information, contact Paul Nichol, Huron Business Development Corporation's economic development manager at 527-0305. Huron Community Matters This past May I attended the 2nd Huron Community Matters Conference in Clinton. This two-day workshop carried out by the United Way gathered people from across the county to share stories of successful collabo- rations and visions for our area. One of the workshops I attended discussed youth and social enterprise in the community. The Huron United Way recently completed consultations with youth at area high schools to discover what students thought were the strengths and weak- nesses of their community. It was interesting to hear that many of the issues youth mentioned were similar to those of adults — they like the scenery, friendly atmos- phere and recreation centres, but would like to see more public transport, town growth, jobs and entertainment. Youth are an important part of the future of our commu- nities, and it's important that we include them in our community discussions. Contact Rebecca Rathwell, project manager at 524- 8394, ext. 3 or rrathwell@huronunitedway.ca for more information about the Huron Community Matters Conference.
