Next time you have a complete physical
examination, ask your doctor to measure your
waist. Waist measurement is a good indicator of
your risk for heart attack and diabetes. For men,
waist size should be 94 cm 1381 or less. For
women, it is 80cm (32"I or less. Diabetes cases are increasing yearly
and much of the cause is due to obesity and lack of exercise.
If you are taking iron supplements, take them with water. Don't drink
any coffee, tea or milk for at least an hour and a half afterwards
because these drinks can inhibit the absorption of the iron. However,
beverages containing vitamin C, like orange juice, can enhance the
absorption of iron.
Speaking of iron absorption, the iron found in red meat, called heme
iron, is the easiest to absorb. When eating red meat, keep in mind that
a healthy serving size is 3 oz. (about the size of a deck of cards(.
Some medications can mimic the symptoms of dementia. The class of
drugs called anticholinergics can cause confusion, memory loss, and
in the ability to think clearly. These symptoms, called cognitive
impairment, may be mistaken for early dementia and may be drug-
induced. If you are concerned, check with your pharmacist and doctor.
