fulling together
This community lost some of its inno-
cence last week. With the tragic deaths
last week of Mount Carmel's Bill and
Helene Regier, a family is in mourning and
wondering how such a terrible thing can hap-
pen to two people who were so loved and
respected in their community. Furthermore,
that such a shocking event would even hap-
pen in a normally quiet area such as South
Huron has many people wondering how safe
they are.
Right now there are few answers and a
whole lot of questions. Why were the Regiers
murdered? And where is prime suspect Jesse
Imeson, also wanted for the murder of a
Windsor man? Even with an OPP-led massive
manhunt, as of this writing, Imeson remains
at large, although the much-discussed silver
GMC Sierra pickup truck has finally been
found.
Fiercely devoted and loyal to their family
and church, the Regiers were remembered
with love at their funeral Monday morning,
which saw about 1,000 people pay their
respects. The funeral's large turnout was tes-
tament not only to the high regard with which
Bill and Helene were held, but also to this
community's response to the tragedy — to
come together to offer caring and support to
Bill and Helene's family and friends.
The tragic deaths of the Regiers last week
have also given South Huron something it is
not used to — the spotlight, and for all the
wrong reasons. The national media descended
upon Huron County as soon as word of the
murders spread. Ever since, headlines have
been splashed across the front pages of large
dailies and television reports appeared on
news programs across the country, including
CBC's "The National." The story then became
international as U.S. television show
"America's Most Wanted" got involved, sched-
uled to arrive in the area yesterday afternoon.
This will all pass, and the healing will begin,
both within the Regier family and throughout
the entire community. South Huron may have
lost some of its innocence last week, and some
of us may be less trustful of others than we
used to be, but this is a strong community and
we will get through this.

An interesting list
Four Canadian prime ministers, two serial
killers, a newspaper baron, a singer and an
anarchist punk rocker wouldn't seem to have
much in common but this week they do as they
have all come together on one magazine list of
the worst Canadian ever, with Pierre
Elliott Trudeau topping the list.
The survey was put together by "The
Beaver," which describes itself as
Canada's history magazine.
The survey was, as the magazine
said, an admittedly unscientific online
poll of 15,000 votes cast with results
that could be easily described as all
over the place.
Any online poll is always open to
manipulation and "The Beaver" results
are no different since coming in just a couple of
hundred votes behind Trudeau was Chris
Hannah, a punk archarist singer no one has
ever heard of and who started an online effort
to have himself declared number one, falling
just short.
Coming in at number three was controversial
doctor Henry Morgentaler who finished ahead
of former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.
It's a sign that Canadians still haven't gotten
over their hate/hate relationship with Mulroney
since he was placed on the list around killers
Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka.
Stephen Harper showed he has a bright
future in the hearts of Canadians, making it on
the list after only a year and a half of running a
minority government and coming in ahead of
singer Celine Dion who managed to screech her
way onto the list at number seven.
Bringing up the bottom third of the
order was Jean Chretien whose only
claim to fame was being the only prime
minister elected to three majority gov-
ernments, an achievement for which
placed him on the list ahead of serial
killer Clifford Olson.
Closing out the list was Conrad Black,
although it isn't known whether the list
was decided before Black's recent con-
viction and whether he made the list
simply for the crimes of wealth and arrogance.
Despite the obvious dislike Canadians have of
politicians, several didn't make the list includ-
ing short-lived leaders such as John Turner
and Kim Campbell who between them man-
aged to run the country for a total of eight
months and lead their parties to crushing
defeats.
What stands out the most is that all the peo-
ple on the list come from the last four decades.
Perhaps we should spend less time griping and
more time actually reading the magazine.
