EXETER — Last week's 54th Annual Meeting of the South
Huron Hospital Association saw board members looking back
on the past year and looking forward to years ahead.
Board chairperson Glenn Bartlett kicked off the June 28
meeting by mentioning the major projects the hospital has
recently undergone, including the Picture Archiving
Communications System (PACS), moving ahead with electronic
patient records and the upcoming renovations to the emer-
gency department.
But he added even more important are the people who work
at South Huron Hospital. Bartlett said the hospital is develop-
ing a strong sense of self and the staff have shown profession-
alism and dedication.
"This is a new, young, dynamic team," he said of the hospi-
tal's leadership team.
Bartlett said he's proud of the talented hospital board and
paid tribute to hospital CEO/president Debra Hunt, whom he
praised for her integrity and determination.
Hunt said the hospital made it through a difficult year thanks
to its staff. She also complimented the hospital board, auxiliary
and foundation and spoke of the PACS and electronic patient
records. Hunt also described the partnership South Huron has
formed with the Thames Valley Hospital system.
Quoting Health Minister George Smitherman, Hunt said
small hospitals will survive, but need to stay current. Hunt said
the hospital has a new strategic plan that will help finalize the
projects it has started.
She said South Huron has a great group of doctors who have
ensured the emergency room shifts remain staffed.
Hunt also thanked Bartlett, in his last year as chairperson of
the board, for his expertise and vision.
Chief of staff Dr. Ming Lam said the doctors have all been
trained on the new PACS and electronic records systems. In

County Agricultural
Environment Officer (AEO)
Glenn Ross, from the Ministry
of the Environment.
Ross told council what he
would like to do in Huron
County to ensure the Nutrient
Management Act (NMA) is
complied with and described
a report he did on farms in
the Bayfield River watershed
area.
Ross said he was hired last
June when the MOE added 10
more AEOs and the NMA is
the first joint agreement
between ministries that he is
aware of.
"The MOE role is compli-
ance," said Ross. "The biggest
push back from the public is
fear of legal action."
Ross said when he started
with the MOE in the early
1980s, the environment was-
n't nearly as well protected
