World Champion and a documentary
By Kaitie Jinks
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
TAVISTOCK — The World
Championship crokinole tourna-
ment was held June 3 in Tavistock,
with Jason Beierling of Varna com-
ing away a champion.
There were 400 people competing
in the tournament including
Exeter's Joe Fulop, a three -time
world champion. Fulop placed sixth,
with 67 points in his first round.
Fulop said the finals were played
as a four man round robin, and
came down to Beierling and Bryan
Cook of Toronto. In the end,
Beierling won.
"It was a job well done by Jason,"
Fulop said. "He played tremendous-
ly well."
Fulop also starred in the World
Crokinole documentary "ffick" that
was recently shown for a selected
audience in Waterloo.
First-time feature filmmakers,
cousins Joshua and Johnathan
Steckley worked on the film for a
year and a half.
The movie plot is about the tour-
nament in Tavistock, and about
how Mr. Crokinole, Wayne Kelly,
brought this idea to the town. The
movie is said to have some "light-
hearted moments" and turns what
many think of an unexciting sport,
into a test of will and stamina.
The movie was dedicated in mem-
ory to a close friend of Fulop,
William Chandler of Exeter.
Accompanying Fulop in the film
were 2000 winner Al Fuhr of
Shakespeare, Robert C. Mader of
Kitchener, Dan Shantz of
Shingletown, brothers Oscar Weber
of Drayton and Enoch Weber of St.
Jacob's, Waldron Eckstein of New
Hamburg and Paul Sorely of
Kitchener.
If you enjoy crokinole, the audi-
ence concluded this is "one ffick you
must see."
