(photo/Pat Bolen) Katie Stewart, with Express rally to win 13-12 EXETER — The Exeter Express and the London Bulls fought hard for 10 innings Friday night before the Bulls were able to pull out a 14-9 victory. It was a game where both teams piled up the hits, where a strong wind led to some unusual plays and where some excellent fielding plays saved the pitchers for another inning. The Express rang up three runs in the first on a double by Aaron Patterson, Justin Hayter's triple and two doubles by Dan Masse and Vic Oliveira. The Bulls rallied over the next two innings to take a 4-3 lead but Exeter responded with two in the third on hits by Hayter, Masse, Oliveira and Marty Merner. Back came the Bulls for five runs over the next two innings which ended Dan Masse's pitching stint for the evening. He was touched up for nine runs on 10 hits. Merner came in to shut down the Bulls for the next four innings allowing just three hits and striking out five of the tough Bull hitters. This gave the Express a chance to rally and they took advantage of their chances to tie the score. They scored three in the sixth with hits again from Patterson, Masse and Oliveira before hits from Bob Grant, Merner and Hawke tied the game in the eighth. The Express had two runners on in the bot- tom of the ninth but were unable to score that much needed run. A valiant Merner tried to hold the Bulls in the 10th but he was tired and the Bulls jumped on him and reliever Paul Elston for five rims on seven hits to win the game. Coach Doug Fairbairn wanted the win badly as the Bulls have now defeated the Express seven straight times A key hit in the eighth or ninth innings could have done it, according to team spokesperson Joe Fulop. Just 12 hours after dropping their game to the London Bulls the Express were involved in the most incredible baseball game I have ever attended, said Fulop. Fairbairn had saved his ace Derek Masse for Strathroy but Masse lasted for only two bat- ters before he had to take a position as a first baseman as his arm was sore. Masse later added to his woes as he took a ball in the face. Strathroy ran up the score to 8-0 after two innings. At this point the Express had only nine players including 57 year old relief pitcher Paul Elston at game time. Elston pitched an inning and played an infield position until Cory Burtch was able to get to the game. The Express turned to pitcher Nate Burns (who had not played in four years) for relief. Burns threw 136 pitches over seven innings as the Express pecked away at Strathroy's lead. One Exeter player was ejected for colliding with the catcher. This meant that Fairbairn had to play the rest of the game as an outfielder. By the top of the ninth inning the Express had tied the game 12-12. Dan Masse, who had pitched five innings on Friday night, relieved in the bottom of the 10th and promptly got him- self into a bases loaded and none out situation. But the Express pulled off a double play and killed the potential rally. In the llth Fairbairn smacked a hard single to center field to drive in the leading and even- tually the winning run. The Express players showed a lot of heart said Fulop, as several of them were nursing injuries and four of them played new posi- tions due to the short- age of players and all of them were tired from the night before. "All of this was against a team that plays at the 'A' level in OBA playoffs. The Express play at the 'D' level tournament. What a game!!," said Fulop. The four Exeter pitch- ers allowed 12 runs on 14 hits. Burns was the work- horse for the day allow- ing six runs on nine hits. Dan Masse picked up the win as he shut out Strathroy for the final two innings while Elston gave up four runs over one plus innings of work. The Express offense exploded with 27 hits throughout the game. Difficult weather con- ditions with the wind and a bright sunlit field contributed to the high hits totals. However, Burns and Grant had five each and Oliveira had four while Hawke and Dan Masse had three each. Aaron Patterson had two, while Fairbairn and Brad Baker chipped in with one hit each. The Express evened their season's record to two wins and two loss- es. They play a double- header in Listowel on Saturday and a home game Sunday in Exeter against Strathroy. lawn bowling Mon., May 29 Peter McFalls Pauline Simmons Har Brintnell Bob Thompson Tues., May 30 Marlene Parker Jim Chapman Fran Mickle Brad Claus Marg Consitt Kathy Triebner Lucy Sage Thurs., June 1 Frank Regier Marshall Dearing Jim Chapman Ray Consitt Fran Mickle Verona Snider John Batten Marg Consitt Marlene Parker Brad Claus Mary DeBoer Jim Chapman Fran Mickle Brad Claus Marg Consitt Kathy Triebner Lucy Sage 2W32 2W28 2W22 1W12 1W1T26 2W25 2W25 2W22 1W11 1W11 1W11 2W26 2W26 2W20 1W19 1W19 1W19 1W14 1W14 1W14 1W13 1W13 2W25 2W25 2W22 1W11 1W11 1W11 Tournament The Exeter Lawn Club hosted a Men's Pairs tournament. The home team got on the board first with a long kick that sailed over the head of Fury keeper Ryan Masse and into the back of the net. Ryan Carroll had a good chance for Exeter as he cracked a hard shot over the net. Benfica made it 2-0 before the half when a low shot from the top of the box found its way into the corner of the net. Ben Willis -Leake had a strong two-way game for the Fury hustling to loose balls and playing sound defense also. Willis -Leake almost added to his game file by scoring on a head ball but the Benfica keeper making a diving stop. Benfica continued to exploit the Fury defence and create large open- ings for excellent scoring chances. The home squad sealed the victory by scoring on a breakaway to make the score 3-0. The Fury struggled to create any offence for the third consecutive game which placed a lot of pressure on the defense and goalkeeper. Exeter played host to St. Thomas in WOSL Second Division play on Sunday and were beaten 5-3. The Fury started well, scoring the opening goal in the first minute of play. for Fury Carroll pressured the last defender and stole the ball, which allowed him to go in all alone on the goaltender. He fired a shot to the bottom right corner, narrowly missing the net. Matt Prout, streak- ing up the right wing, caught up to the ball and deposited it into the net. St. Thomas stormed right back, scoring the next five goals of the half. St. Thomas scored all of their goals from in close to the Fury net with a couple being just out of the reach of keeper Ryan Masse. Exeter got a goal late in the first half when a penalty shot was award- ed fora foul. Carroll made no mis- take and the teams went to the break with a 5-2 score. Exeter played a stronger second half and had several chances, but were not able to get one by the St. Thomas keep- er until Justin Muller sent Tom Phouttharath in alone. Phouttharath shot the ball past a charging keeper and brought the home side to within two. St. Thomas tried to extend their lead with a cannon of a shot, but Masse got his fingers on it to deflect it over the net. Exeter was not able to score again and missed their chance to move up in the standings. They next see action on Saturday evening ver- sus Benfica in London.
