Pigeons get help from tailwind
LUCAN — The latest races the
Lucan Homing Pigeon Club par-
ticipated in were "a breeze"; that
is, a strong breeze from the south
east.
Where in the previous race the
pigeons battled a strong head-
wind, this time they were helped
along by a stiff tailwind.
Four members shipped 41
pigeons to Cobourg, a distance of
approximately 272 kilometers to
Lucan. These birds were released
at 8 a.m.
Three of Norm Hardy's pigeons
landed at the home loft at the
same time. The electronic timer
clocked them at 12:20.01,
12:20.03 and 12:20.04, giving
them an average speed of 63 kilo-
metres per hour.
Tom Hardy clocked his first bird
at 12:23.11. Al de Haan was close
behind at 12:27.32, and Lucan's
Brendan Cunningham clocked his
first one from Cobourg at
12:52.37.
Jack Hardy decided to contest
only the shorter Oshawa race.
Nice of him since he might very
well have won the long one too!
The Oshawa birds (77 of them)
were released at 9 a.m. Jack
clocked his first one at 11:47.45,
giving this bird a winning speed
of 78 kilometres per hour.
Cunningham clocked his first
bird at 11:49.09, while Jack
Hardy got his second one at
11:49.14, a mere five seconds
later.
Cunningham would appear to
be the winner. However, because
his pigeon had to fly a distance
shorter by about a hundred
metres, Jack Hardy's bird placed
second and Cunningham's got
third. Cunningham also got fourth
and sixth.
Norm Hardy placed fifth, Al de
Haan seventh and Tom Hardy got
eighth. As the season progresses
we continue to invoke the (modi-
fied) Irish blessing:
May the wind always be in your
pigeons' backs on race -
day south east, that is.
