GRAND BEND — The Grand Bend Community Foundation celebrated its
sixth year May 24 with a lunch honouring its volunteers at the
Community Health Centre in Grand Bend.
Foundation chairperson Hank Kretch said 2005 was a banner year for
the foundation, which was founded from the sale of the Public Utilities
Commission.
Since its inception with an original fund of $1 5 million, the foundation
has grown to over $2 million after making grants to over $450,000 to 18
different organizations.
Kretch said in 2005 the organization made grants of $142,000 and that
2006 is shaping up to be an interesting year and the foundation is hoping
to repeat its performance of last year.
Lambton Shores Mayor Cam Ivey said the foundation was set up to
ensure ratepayers get a return on their investment with minimum politi-
cal intervention.
Ivey described the group as a "huge community asset," and said few
communities the size of Grand Bend have access to an organization like
the foundation.
"Volunteers make it work," said Ivey. "It has picked up the slack after
amalgamation."
