Hawks swept out
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Two
goals in the first five
minutes were all the
Lucan Irish needed to
complete a sweep of
the Exeter Hawks
Friday night at the
South Huron Rec
Centre.
The Irish advanced to
the next round of the
playoffs with a 4-1 win
after defeating the
Hawks 5-2 Feb. 25 in
Lucan and now wait
for their opponent to
be decided.
"Snakebit," was how
Exeter coach and gen-
eral manager Dale
Howard described the
way the Hawks played
during the series.
"Injuries finally
caught up to us, games
one and two I could
only dress two lines
and two extra play-
ers...it started to hurt
us."
The Hawks were
hurting with a variety
of injuries according to
Howard with Josh
Liddle suffering from a
dislocated shoulder,
Dan Moir a sprained
ankle and Craig Masse
trying to play on two
broken feet.
"I had to load every-
body up on one line,
which was easy to shut
down...you're asking
your third line to step
up and be your sec-
ond."
Howard added
though the Hawks beat
themselves in game
three. "We just could-
n't score, we just shot
right into his chest."
In other playoff
action, Thamesford
eliminated West Lorne
in five games while
North Middlesex leads
Lambeth 3-1 and Mt.
Brydges is ahead 3-1
on Mitchell.
Lucan coach Jason
Heywood said the Irish
got some bounces early
in the series and won
despite not playing well
Friday night.

rink that night and that
enabled us to win."
Heywood said the
turning point in the
series was the first
game. "We had to
establish identity early
in the series and try to
get off on the right
foot."
Wednesday night the
Hawks rebounded
from an early 2-0
deficit to tie the game
at two.
But it wasn't enough
as the Hawks went
down to the 5-2 defeat.
Irish players Aaron
Whitcomb and Trevor
Medeiros put Lucan
ahead in the first peri-
od before Craig Masse
and Tony Regier got
the Hawks back on an
even footing in the sec-
ond.
But just two minutes
after the Hawks tied it
Shawn Williams put
the Irish ahead to stay
and Kevin Dean and
Medeiros sealed the
win in the third with
two more goals.
Jeff Silver and Kyle
Smith had a pair of
assists in the win for
the Irish with singles to
Kyle Roth, Trevor
Liddle, Bob Martin, Jeff
Mclean and Whitcomb.
Picking up assists in
the loss for the Hawks
were Justin Young,
Scott Davies, Joe
Nesbitt and Jason
Stuckless as the Hawks
outshot the Irish 38-37.
Exeter went 0-3 on
the power play with
Lucan collecting one on
five chances with the
man advantage.
Friday night
Medeiros put the Irish
on the board four min-
utes into the game
before Silver notched
what would be the
game and series win-
ner two minutes later.
Ryan Giffen made it a
3-0 game late in the
second period and the
Irish put the game
away in the opening
seconds of the third
period when Whitcomb
notched another power
play goal for a 4-0 lead.
The Hawks power
play continued to flick-
er going 0-8 in the
game and going score-
less in the series.
Josh Liddle took
advantage of a break
Exeter's way as a
bounce off the boards
landed in front of an
empty net but it was all
the Hawks could get as
time ran out on the
game, the series and
their season.

Jets down 2-0
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN — "You can't afford to give teams like that
four -goal leads two nights in a row," said Lucan-
Ilderton Jets general manager Rob Andrews after the
Jets dropped the first two games of their series with the
Elora Rocks.
In other matchups Clinton and Durham are even at
one game apiece, with Tavistock and Lucknow also tied
with one win each. Hensall evened its series with
Shelburne at one apiece with a 4-2 win Saturday night
in Hensall.
"They're just that good. When you make mistakes,
they definitely make you pay for it...two games in a row
we've come out really flat and haven't been able to
answer the call," said Andrews.
Friday night in Elora, the Jets were down 4-0 in the
first 10 minutes of the game before replacing goalie
Dave Riddell with Marc Williams and ended up on the
short end of a 6-2 score.
Supplying the offence for the Jets were Brady
Kjeldgaard and Brad Yeo.
It was almost a replay Saturday night in Lucan with
the Rocks again coming out strong to build a 4-0 lead in
the first period.
But the Jets rebounded to make game two close. "We
came out in the second period and totally outplayed
them," said Andrews as the Jets scored from Tim
Parsons and Mark Landon to make it 4-2 going into the
third.
After a goal from Yeo in the third cut the lead to 4-3
the Jets pulled their goalie trying to get the tying goal
but fell short in a 4-3 loss.
"We had lots of chances but couldn't put it in," said
Andrews.
Andrews said while the Jets realize it will be tough to
get back in the series against the defending champions,
he credits his team with not giving up after being down.
"They fought back in both games but we couldn't capi-
talize on the opportunities we had."
Lucan-Ilderton will resume its series Friday night in
Elora at 8:30 p.m. with game four Saturday night in
Lucan at 8:30 p.m.
