July 25 • 50 golfers Event: Yellow Brick Road on #2 Lynn Hunter-Duvar Lauraine Snell Bonnie VanBelois ‘Imc- z 1 z O 12-6 loss for Express EXETER — The Exeter Express started strong- ly July 28 against Lakeside taking an early 6-0 lead, scoring four runs in the first inning on hits by Aaron Patterson, Nate Burns, Justin Hayter and Dan Masse. Two more runs were scored in the second as Grant tripled and Nick Regier singled. Then the wheels came off the Express machine, said spokesman Joe Fulop, who added Dan Masse had problems adapting to the umpire's strike zone and gave up five runs in the second inning Lakeside had two walks and five hits in the rally. Curtis Meyers relieved and kept the game close until the fourth when he was relieved by Derek Masse. Lakeside hitters solved Masse though and five Exeter errors led to a 12-6 Lakeside lead by the sixth inning. Lakeside manager Al Gates brought in a new pitcher to face the Express in the third and Fulop said "this man could pitch. He is the best we have seen all year," as 15 Express batters struck out over the next seven innings Only two Express bat- ters had hits–Nate Burns and Aaron Patterson. Frustrations built up on the Express players as they saw their chances of winning the preliminary pennant slide away, said Fulop. There didn't appear to be anything on the bright side to consider after this shellacking. The team does know it can play better defen- sively, he added. Jason Cox pitched his way out of two prob- lems in the final two innings to allow no Lakeside runs; the team saw what losing was like and they didn't like it. Manager Doug Fairbairn will be back for the rest of the games. The team will now await their first round opponent in league playoffs. There is also a possi- bility of a preliminary OBA series with Mitchell to qualify for the tournament in Wallaceburg. The Express will come back as their record this season indicates there is no quitting in the players' attitudes, said Fulop. Talent and hard work over the next month, plus no more injuries will give the team an excellent chance to do well in both the league and OBA playoffs, he said.
