(photo/submitted) By Nina Van Lieshout TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF GRAND BEND — The Huron Country Playhouse rocked out to "The Buddy Holly Story" opening night, July 27. The non-stop rock till you drop concert style play kept everyone on their toes during the two-hour pro- duction directed by Adam Furfaro with the assistance of Dave Campbell. The performance takes the audience on a musical journey outlining Holly's short but successful career starting in Texas playing country to rocking and rolling around the world. Holly, played by 25 -year-old Vancouver Island native Zachary Stevenson naturally portrays the music leg- end, making it obvious Stevenson was a great pick for the role. The play, focusing on Holly's earli- er days with the Crickets, included many renditions of Holly's greatest hits like "Peggy Sue," "That'll Be The Day," "Not Fade Away," "Rave On," and many more. Appearances were also made by the Big Bopper, singing "Chantilly Lace," and Ritchie Valens with "La Bamba" and "Why Do Fools Fall In Love." Former Petro site to become park or parkette By Nina Van Lieshout TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF LUCAN BID- DULPH — The former Petro Canada site in Lucan will either become a park or parkette. Lucan Biddulph council was informed the building is not usable and any recommen- dations regard- ing the future of the building would be denied. Deputy Mayor Perry Caskanette would like to know how much it will cost to remove the building. Council spoke briefly as to what the site should become. No decision was made. There will be more discussion at a future coun- cil meeting, to decide if a park or parkette will be more suitable for the site. In other coun- cil notes: Water and sewage Council is planning to put together a water and sewage committee. Members of the committee haven't been chosen yet. Firecracker complaint Lucan Biddulph clerk Ron Reymer received a com- plaint from a resident regard- ing firecrackers. The Lucan Biddulph com- munity can report misuse of firecrackers and fireworks to either the town- ship office or the Lucan OPP. Shipley letter Concerned Lucan citizen Jim Shipley, in a written letter to council expressed his issues with the upcoming Saintsbury sub- division. Those included safety concerns, the condition of Saintsbury Road, the municipal drain, parkland funds for children and increased traffic flow. Council is addressing these issues. Arena update The Lucan Memorial Community Centre is hosting a two week skat- ing school, wrapping up at the end of the week. Arena manag- er Ken Needham says they've seen about 125- 150 children per week. The ice is being used about 61 hours a week, seven day a week. The Leprechaun Hall washroom should be fin- ished by the end of the week. Soccer regis- tration is down from 253 chil- dren to 161 chil- dren this year. Needham and council contem- plated if that number is accu- rate. Benches will soon be put up by the new skate park beside the arena. Advertising on the ice resurfac- er was dis- cussed. Council will entertain five-year pro- posals by local companies to advertise on the resurfacer. Council spoke of the arena's rules regarding clean up after using the facility. Needham says groups leaving the hall extra messy are charged more money. Fire update The fire bud- get is in good standing and fire calls are lower than nor- mal for Lucan Biddulph. Council reminds resi- dents to notify the fire depart- ment before they have con- trolled burns. This has been an issue recent- ly. The cast shone with musical talent. Music director Robert Foster deserves much credit. Aadin Church, in particular, who took on several roles, nailing every single one, was brilliant. This play is an excellent interpretation of Holly's life, involving the audience throughout the show. The performance makes you feel as if you went on the roller coaster rock 'n' roll ride with Holly. And when singer Church recalls the day the music died, the day Holly, only 22 years old, the Big Bopper and Valens died in a plane crash in America's Midwest in 1959, it truly feels as if you've just lost your best friend. This production promises a good time for everyone, Holly fan or not. "The Buddy Holly Story" runs until Aug. 12.
