'Pine sampler' open for business
HENSALL — In May of this year, Paul Leclair and
Gillian Mitchell moved from their 10 acre hobby farm
just north of Zurich to Hensall in order to experience
life in a small town.
They fell in love with the town and met many of their
neighbours who have been friendly and welcoming.
The former owner of their new home, Judy Walker,
left them a book on the history of Hensall.
Reading through it, they learned Hensall was once a
village with many mills and thriving shops.
The couple noticed a store for sale on Main Street
that had potential but needed a vision and T.L.C.
They decided to purchase the store and see if they
could make a difference in trying to rejuvenate the
downtown.
After six weeks of extensive renovations, Paul and
Gillian have just opened a furniture store called 'Pine
Sampler Furniture.'

POLICE BRIEFS
Stolen vehicle found
SOUTH HURON — On Oct. 7, Huron OPP were con-
tacted about an abandoned vehicle near Kirkton Road
in South Huron. An officer learned a citizen had been
walking in the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority
area when a green 1996 Chevrolet Cheyenne pickup
truck was found. The officer found the vehicle in ques-
tion had been stolen in January of this year from an
address in St. Catharines. The vehicle, other than hav-
ing the ignition damaged was in good condition.
Speeders stopped
SOUTH HURON — Huron OPP officers have been busy
writing tickets for speeders in the County. An officer on
Oct. 6 and Oct. 7 using radar on Huron Road in Central
Huron stopped several youths on the way to school or
heading home after. Three youths, two of which had
multiple people inside the car were doing speeds of
127, 120 and 117 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. Those
same two days numerous speeding tickets were written
in the Communities of Dashwood and Crediton. Then
on Oct. 9 on Thames Road in South Huron near Exeter
another vehicle was stopped for 127 in a 90 km/h zone.
The officer detected other smells inside a blue 1997
Saturn. After a closer look and lack of cooperation by
the driver the officer found other traffic issues. A 23 -
year -old male from London was charged with the
speeding violation, driving a motor vehicle with no
license and use of validation not furnished for the vehi-
cle.
Stolen vehicle found
BLUEWATER — On Oct. 10 OPP received a call from
a property owner on Ausable Line in Bluewater over a
found vehicle. The owner was walking through a bush
lot when an abandoned vehicle was located with dam-
age to the right side and rear corner. The officer
checked a four door maroon Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra
and found it was stolen from a residence on Churchill
Drive in Exeter last Oct. 2.
made teddy bears from German Mohair and selling
them all over the world for the past six years.
"The local community has been watching our
progress over the past two months and we are hoping
they will come in and support us," says LeClair.
The new store is full of original one of a kind pieces
as well as handcrafted solid wood furniture made by
the Mennonites.
Leclair and some associates in the furniture business
also build many pieces, specializing in rustic, primitive
looking furniture.
The store at 111 King Street is hard to miss.
The two-storey building has been painted an eye
catching two toned mustard, complete with an old
fashioned awning and window lettering.
Two floors are devoted to retail space and are brim-
ming with solid wood bedroom suites, tables and
chairs as well as extras like baskets, mirrors, frame
prints, tinware and those wonderful bears.
Leclair says they are taking a chance opening in
Hensall, but hopes they can make a difference in try-
ing to jump start the downtown again.
"If you support your local merchants and stores
thrive, more stores may open and property values will
go back up. so let's do our part and not let these little
towns die, that way everybody wins. It's all about
hometown pride."
