"Gardens Alive 2005" in Kirkton
KIRKTON — The
Kirkton/Woodham
Community Centre was
the setting for the sum-
mer flower show "Gardens
Alive in 2005," presented
by the Kirkton
Horticultural Society Aug.
9.
Judges Margaret
Aitcheson and Phyllis
O'Neil were impressed
with the beautiful
arrangements, designs
and flower specimens,
despite near drought con-
ditions in most areas.
The evening commenced
with the singing of "0
Canada," and president
Elaine Stephen honoured
retiring directors Marjorie
Atthill, Marilyn Robinson
and Mary Tufts, com-
mending each for their
tireless efforts in making
the Kirkton Horticultural
Society what it is today.
Members were then
reminded by Robinson of
the upcoming bus trip to
the Hamilton
Chrysanthemum Festival
Oct. 26.
Director Sandra Kemp
was called upon to intro-
duce guest speaker Denise
Hodgins. Hodgins is a
graduate of the Fanshawe
College landscape
design/horticultural pro-
gram, as well as holding
several related degrees
conferred by the horticul-
tural division of the
University of Guelph.
Using slides and a well-
documented description,
Hodgins discussed how to
achieve lots of colour in
the garden by using mass
plantings and successively
blooming flowers.
For those with less gar-
den space, the same effect
could be achieved by using
numerous groupings of
well-filled planters placed
on decks, patios and door
entrances.
With moisture mainte-
nance becoming a serious
issue, Hodgins suggests at
least six to eight inches of
well -rotted, "not smelly"
manure and/or mulched
leaves.
Having recently travelled
to flower and garden
trend -setting Holland and
nearby Scandinavian
countries, Hodgins pointed
out that the gardens of the
future, to suit climate and
environmental changes,
will focus on foliage only
plantings. Leaf texture,
variegation, size and
colour will provide varia-
tions in these gardens.
Hodgins suggests it may
take a few years before
this catches on in North
America.

her childhood sweetheart and moved to Lot 5
