Jets get ready for second season
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN — The Lucan Ilderton
Jets will begin the process of
defending their Senior 'A' title
in their second season with an
open training camp Sept. 1 at 9
p.m. in Lucan.
Jets General manager Rob
Andrews said the team wants to
build on its success from last
season and will look to fill holes
left from the departure of some
players from last year's team.
Andrews said the team is look-
ing for a couple of physical
defencemen as well as replacing
one of their top scorers, Shawn
Fairweather, who will be in
Australia this season.
The Jets are solid in goal,
according to Andrews, with both
Marc Williams and Dave Riddell
returning between the pipes.
"It should be a pretty competi-
tive camp," said Andrews who
added there are probably four
or five spots open this season.
Back behind the bench will be
head coach Ed Robb, assisted by
Glen Marshall.
"It's hard to change a lot of
things with the success we had,"
said Andrews.
One of the things Andrews said
the Jets would like to see
changed that will be discussed
at the league meeting Aug. 29 is
a realignment of the schedule
with an emphasis on playing
local teams more often.
"We're hoping they can
realign into a north -south type
thing. It just doesn't make sense
for teams like Georgian Bay and
Ripley to be coming to Lucan to
play...we think it would be bet-
ter to have Clinton in twice and
Hensall in twice.
"It just costs too much money
to bus to Durham and Georgian
Bay and I can see why teams get
in financial trouble. Because it's
all about putting people in the
stands and you do that by get-
ting the local teams playing
each other."
To register for the Jets camp

Exeter Challenge Cup
EXETER — For the third
year in a row, the
Challenge Cup will be
hosted in Exeter this
Saturday.
"It is a lot of work but
worth the effort to give
the teams the advantage
of playing at home," said
South Huron minor soccer
president Andrew Darling.
One of the reasons
Exeter continues to host
the event is the fact it is
one of the few centres that
has the facilities.
It has been another good
year for soccer in Exeter
according to Darling, with
435 kids playing from ages
4-17.
"It's quite encouraging
when you see so many,"
said Darling.
Next season will see fur-
ther expansion with a web
page planned.
Anyone wishing to help
with the tournament
can contact darling at
235-006.

Exeter Mosquitos
LISTOWEL — The
Exeter Mosquito baseball
team were runners-up in
their WOBA tournament
over the weekend in
Listowel.
The first game Friday
night had Exeter against
Owen Sound and Exeters
came on top with a con-
vincing 23-1 win.
In the second game
Exeter played a stubborn
Hanover team and came
out on top 12-8.
The win put the kids
against the only other
unbeaten team, Saugeen
Shores.
Exeter went ahead early
with a run in the first
inning but Saugeen tied it
up with a run in the bot-
tom of the third.
The home side answered
with two of their own in
the top of the fourth to
take back the lead.
Saugeen answered with
three runs of their own in
the bottom of the fourth
and another four runs in
the fifth to take a com-
manding 8-3 lead.
With two outs Exeter ral-
lied to score six runs and
take the lead and strong
pitching and good defence
made the lead hold up.
The team seemed to
have used up all of their
energy Saturday night as
Sunday they were beaten
twice by Goderich, the sec-
ond game in the final.
Although disappointed,
the team consisting of
Jacob Foxton, Colin
Gingerich, Cadyn
Lightfoot, Ryan Watson,
Justin Horner, Ty Bilcke,
Brandon Dinney, Mitchell
Vandergunst, Devon
Elliott, Grayson Homuth
and Bowen Davey had a
successful tournament.
The next action for the
team will be in the OBA
tournament in Woodslee
Labour Day weekend.
