Hundey has been writ- ing for about 25 years just for fun. Now that he's half retired and has more time he's concentrating on hav- ing a few of his pieces published. The short story submit- ted for the writers' festival has also been sent to Alfred Hitchcock's maga- zine. Hundey says "my story seems to fit the type of work they publish so hopefully I'll hear back Graduate -Phil and Ellen Conlin are pleased to announce the graduation of their daughter Anne Elizabeth from the Shulich School of Medicine, University of Western Ontario, May 20th, 2005. Congratulations, Mom & Dad, Tara & Mike, Pat & Kelly and Cathy TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — There were about 40 entries for the Alice Munro Writers Festival, but Exeter's Rick Hundey won first place. The 4th annual festival which took place last month honours Wingham- born Clinton resident Alice Munro, regarded as one of Canada's best writers of short stories. This was Hundey's first time submitting. He stresses that although winning first place is a great achievement, it's not necessarily the reason he entered the contest. The Times -Advocate regrets the error. TA welcomes new reporter By Nina Van Lieshout TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF NAIRN — Hello every- one, my name is Nina Van Lieshout and I'm the newest member of the reporting team at the Exeter Times -Advocate. After completing a two- year program at Fanshawe College for Broadcasting Journalism, print journal- ism will be a whole new world for me, but I'm up for the challenge. I decided after school I want- ed to explore others areas of journalism and I figured working for a newspaper would be ideal. Let me tell you a bit about myself. I've lived in Nairn, yes the big town of Nairn (population 350) for about 12 years. I actually love living there although some days I do wish it was closer to something, anything real- ly. Apart from the park and public school, which I've kind of outgrown, there's really not much going on. Although life in Nairn may seem a little shel- tered I really have been pretty lucky. I've been to Europe several times, mainly Holland (I was born there). I've also been to the United States a couple of times, getting the opportunity to go to Disney World to meet some of my favourite characters! Something I would real- ly love to do is travel Canada — hopefully one day this dream comes true. One of my other favourites in life is rock 'n' roll music (and con- certs). To date I've seen about 25 different rock 'n' roll bands live. Another love I have is animals. I have two dogs and five cats and if it were up to me I would adopt more. Among my other likes are sports, shopping, trying new things and hanging out with friends. Just before I wrap this col- umn up, I'd like to say I'm very excited about the opportunity I have to work here at the Exeter Times - Advocate. I think it'll be great cov- ering different sto- ries in and around the Exeter area. If you ever see me please don't be hesitant to come and say "hello" and if you would ever like any stories cov- ered or have any ideas for me, I will do my best to help you out. He's been in trouble with the law and goes to look for work in a rural setting, unfor- tunately get- ting himself in situations with people who have ulterior motives. Although Hundey enjoys writing stories involving murder mysteries he also has a knack for writing children's nieces. pieces. "I used to write different for my children they were younger,"he explains. "Now that they've grown I'm not really doing that anymore." For the past two years Hundey has been in a writers' group. It consists of about five to six people from around the Exeter area. Hundey says "it's nice getting some stories when "Hopefully if I get published I'll be able to visit English classes, sharing my experiences as a writer," RICK HUNDEY Feedback from other writ- ers, from other writ- ers, some have even got- ten their work published." For the near future, on top of getting a couple of stories published, Hundey would love to visit schools. "Hopefully if I get pub- lished I'll be able to visit English classes, sharing my experiences as a writer," explains Hundey. "I'm also re -doing part of a novel I wrote a while ago. I'd really like to use some of the things I've learned most recently to polish that piece."
