The Times Advocate, 2005-06-29, Page 21Wednesday, June 29, 2005 Exeter Times–Advocate 21 Sports 11-1 win for Express EXETER — Sometimes you play your best but it's just not enough to win. Such was the case June 24 as the Express lost a 6- 1 decision to the Strathroy Royals. Lonnie Hawke gutted it out to pitch three innings allowing three runs on five hits. He was relieved by Exeter ace Marty Merner who allowed three runs on eight scattered hits. The defense also played well. The problem was that the Strathroy hurler Douglas was a little better on the day. He permitted zero runs over seven innings on four hits. Strathroy built up their lead early and led 6-0 by the fifth inning Exeter scored in the eighth on four hits. On the day, newcomer Paul Walker led the hitters with two singles. Other top offensive per- formances came from Bobby Grant, Nick Regier, Dan Masse, Lonnie Hawke and Aaron Patterson. The Express went to play the other first place team in St. Thomas on Saturday in oppressive conditions. The team played excep- tional defense led by Patterson at shortstop. The outfield trio of Terry Genttner, Corey Burtch and Chris Smith ran down several well hit balls. Catcher Grant caught the whole game and gave his usual stellar effort. (photo/Stephanie Mandziuk) was the pitching of veter- an star pitcher Dan Masse who held the Elgins to one run on four hits. He was in charge the whole game. The Express wore their hitting shoes on this day ringing up 11 runs on 13 hits. The game was tied 0-0 until the fifth inning when the Express rallied for seven runs. They added four more over the next two innings when the mercy rule was applied. The final score was Exeter 11 and St. Thomas 1. Offensive stars were Burtch with three solid hits and two hits each from Patterson, Hawke, Dan Masse and Smith. Grant chipped in with his usual two walks and a hit. The Express played Tuesday and again tonight (Wednesday) in London, plus there is a July 1 exhi- bition contest with the Exeter Juniors. Then the worst part of a brutal schedule is over, according to team spokesman Joe Fulop. He added hopefully some of the injured players will be back after the break in the schedule ends and the team will show how good they really are.
