Heywood has been an assistant with the Exeter Hawks and St. Marys. He said with the talent the Irish have, "I should be able to step in and have a winning team...there is a great core coming back and I expect we have a good chance to win the All -Ontario champi- onship. The last few years they've definitely been close. Hopefully this year can be their year. "I'm just excited at the challenge. I think we'll have a good squad and I'm really excited to be affiliated with St. Marys because that's where I played my Junior B hock- ey" Heywood said his team would play a simple style. "It will be third man high, and probably run and gun type of style. With that many guys coming back, and the core of play- ers we're going to have, the last thing we're going to do is sit back...we're going to have fun. "We want people to come to the rink. The only way for guys to get bet- ter at that age is to play that way. To sit back in a Heywood defensive style is no way for a 17 year old to get better. Assisting Heywood behind the bench will be Justin Fidler, which Haywood said would be an advantage since he knows the players. "It's nice to have a new Jason look at things, but it's also nice to know what some- one can do when maybe they haven't had the best of starts because not everybody gets off to a great start during the year," said Heywood. The most important part of his coaching style, according to Heywood, is the person comes first. "If you're a good person, we'll take a chance on you and work with you. But if you're not a good person, you won't play for the Lucan Irish." Heywood said dealing with younger players, would require more patience on his part. "They're just figuring things out for themselves so you have to be a bit patient." Heywood said while it would be tough since he has been a member of the rival Exeter Hawks, "your loyalties are always to who you're with last." Crediton splits games Fury edged CREDITON - The Crediton junior girls fast - ball team split two games with only one run difference between the scores. Crediton 3 vs Strathroy Intermediates 4 Crediton played a fast -paced game on Friday night in Strathroy but ended up on the losing side by a score of 4-3. The team successfully had the bases loaded in the first and fifth innings but were unable capitalize and score some needed runs. Kelli Fulton and Jessica Bray led their team with their batting prowess with two singles apiece. Julie Prout, Nikki Cyr, Melissa Prout and Carie Pertschy added single hits apiece. Pitcher Carrie Dixon had a very strong night facing only three bat- ters in four of the six innings. Crediton 1 1 vs Oakridge 10 The Crediton junior girls softball team fought the foggy weather last week but ended the game with finesse defeating Oakridge by a score of 11-10. Crediton jumped on the board early in the first inning, scoring two runs. Oakridge replied with one run in the second and the game remained close until midway through the game when Oakridge scored seven runs to take an 8-2 lead. Crediton's opponents openly flaunted their lead which made the local squad's bats come alive in the sixth inning scoring seven runs. What is that saying... "a Jan Dy elle kstra woman scorned"? Oakridge replied in the top of the seventh to again take the lead but they were quickly bumped from that spot when Crediton took their last bat. Kerri Fulton in the `clean up' position played that spot perfectly with a home run, adding a single hit in the seventh inning. Janelle Dykstra has to be given the 'star of the game' with the winning hit in the seventh inning - bases loaded, two out - Dykstra pounded out a hard ball down the third baseline to score the two runs needed to win the game. Julie Prout and Jessica Bray pounded out doubles during the game with sin- gle hits off the bats of Jessica Davies and Nikki Cyr. Amber Preszcator and Kelli Fulton laid down some perfect bunts to move their teammates to scoring position. Carrie Dixon went the distance on the mound notching five strikeouts. Kerri Fulton EXETER — The Exeter Fury travelled to Simcoe on Sunday where they came out on the short end of a 2-1 score. The Fury had their chances to score in the opening minutes when Ryan Carroll was unsuc- cessful in burying a rebound given up by the Simcoe keeper. A short time later, Pete Phouttharath found him- self one on one with the goalie but wasn't able to muster enough power to beat him. Midway through the half, Simcoe got past the Exeter defence and beat Exeter keeper Nate Holmes with a low shot. In the second half, the Fury came out strong. In the second minute of play, Matt Strano made a pass to Matt Prout who then dished the ball to Peter McAllister who was able to bury his third goal in as many games. The tie was shortlived. Simcoe cleared their end a few minutes later. After a miscue by an Exeter defender it was pocketed into the net by the Simcoe striker. "It was a close game, but a game that we should have won," said team spokesman Shawn McFalls. "McAllister played another good game tonight. He looks like the Peter from the late '90s. The Fury next see action tonight (Wednesday) in St. Thomas at 6:30 p.m. for their first Second Division Cup game.
