The Times Advocate, 2005-06-29, Page 1616 Exeter Times–Advocate Wednesday,June 29, 2005 Communications specialist hired for source water protection EXETER — The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA), in part- nership with the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA), has hired Huron County journalist and teacher Tim Cumming as Communications Specialist for the new Source Water Protection Project. The new communications specialist will share his time between the Source Water Protection Project and the ABCA "There are exciting waterTim Cum initiatives happening across your two watersheds and we have to do more to nurture those efforts and begin new ones to clean up source water," Cumming said. "Municipalities, home and cottage owners, farmers, businesses and indi- viduals all have vital and positive roles to play in conserving water and keeping chemicals and bacteria out of your water." Everyone has a role in cleaning up source water or keeping source water clean, he said. Cumming said the ABCA and MVCA hope to use many forms of communication to let area residents know about the importance of keeping source water clean, publicizing new efforts to clean up or protect source water and letting peo- ple know what they can do to be part of the Source Water Protection Project. Cumming, who has degrees in journalism and education, has been a longtime advocate for source -water protection and was interviewed for a TVO documentary news item on issues of water quality in the Lake Huron area. He is a Goderich resident with more than 10 years experience in community ming journalism in Huron, Perth and Bruce counties. He is a past editor of The Goderich Signal -Star and The Huron Expositor in Seaforth. "Communication with people in the two watersheds is a pillar of our strate- gy to protect clean source water for cur- rent and future generations," said pro- ject manager Cathie Brown. "We are creating an exciting team of skilled and positive people who are committed to the importance of clean water and we are excited to have some- one with Tim's experience and skills join that developing team." Bang of a bust By Stephanie Mandziuk TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF HURON COUNTY — A 35 -year-old man from Huron County is one of 38 people charged in connection with a mas- sive drug bust across four counties. OPP conducted a 13 - month undercover investigation into illicit drug activity in Huron, Perth, Bruce and Grey counties. Police concentrated their efforts on street - level and mid-level methamphetamine traffickers. Illegal drugs valued at more than $615,000 were seized during the June 23 raids. Police have laid 227 charges. A local place for many local faces By Stephanie Mandziuk TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF GRAND BEND — Bikini Bob's Restaurant and Beach Club opened Thanksgiving weekend 2004. Since then it's become a regular hang out for the locals and that's just what the general manager had hoped for. Jennifer Gaukroger says, "People who work here are from here and are liv- ing here. We're local and we provide an affordable, fun atmosphere." The roadhouse, on Grand Bend's main street has a capacity for 240 people. There are two outdoor patios, one smok- ing and one non-smoking. There's also a private room on the second floor that can be rented for par- ties. Bikini Bob's is known for its contractor's lunch — a quick, hot and cheap meal between $5-$6. Did I mention the strip sirloin dinner for only $8.95? The restaurant is open daily from 10 a.m. for breakfast until 2 a.m. for those with the late night munchies. The Project Plan was completed by Totten Sims Hubicki Associates (TSH) of Kitchener, and has been prepared in accordance with the Class Environmental Assessment for Remedial Flood and Erosion Control Projects, approved for projects of this type. As described in the Project Plan, the Conservation Authority is proposing to construct erosion protection for portions of the Armstrong West Subdivision along the Ausable River in Port Franks. Interested persons are invited to review this document at the Conservation Authority office. Copies are also available for review at the Lambton Shores municipal offices at Forest, Northville and Grand Bend.
