Goldsmith speaking at Grand BendWI meeting
GRAND BEND — The
Grand Bend annual
Women's Institute (WI)
meeting was held April 28
at Sauble Court. A deli-
cious potluck luncheon
preceded the meeting
which was chaired by
president Cass Lovie.
Items for the Children's
Hospital were collected
during the roll call.
A guest from Curves in
Exeter representing the
Pink Ribbon girls
explained the calendar
that is being made. The
profits will support breast
cancer research. One in
nine women will have
breast cancer and one in
four will not survive. A
donation was made to this
group. A donation of
money was also given to
the Exeter Fair.
A favourable report was
given concerning the edu-
cation fair and luncheon
that celebrated the 60th
anniversary of Grand
Bend WI.
A partial payment will
be made to the Adult Day
Care for the purchase of a
mechanical life. Women
are reminded of the
Huron South District
annual meeting May 19 in
Crediton and the district
picnic July 5 at Grand
Bend.
The WI Rose program
and the local program will
be distributed by the
Welcome Wagon repre-
sentative.
"A Year in Review"
2004-2005 sheet was
given to each woman pre-
sent. Trips, speakers and
crafts were enjoyed over
the past months.
There are still a few
seats left on the bus for
the trip to Brantford
Grand River Cruise.
Exeter M&M Meat Shop owners Odette Pelletier, centre, and Ron Howson, right,
held a "MeetYour New Neighbours" barbecue last Saturday, with all proceeds
going to South Huron Hospital. The event raised $1,564.70. Standing with Pelletier
and Howson (who took over the business in November) is South Huron Mayor
Rob Morley. M&M will host another fundraising barbecue May 14 for Crohn's dis-

Speeding through Huron County
By Pauline Kerr
SPECIAL TO THE T -A
GODERICH — People
driving through Huron
County don't waste time
on details like sticking to
the speed limit, according
to a traffic study done for
the county's highways
department last fall.
The study was done for
the purpose of classifying
roads for maintenance
purposes, according to a
report by county engineer
Don Pletch. County council
voted to make the results
available to the public.
What the numbers indi-
cate is whatever part of
the county, the majority of
drivers move at well in
excess of the posted speed
limit
For example, readings
taken on County Road 86,
just east of the intersec-
tion at County Road 4 (in a
50 km/h zone) near
Wingham, half the traffic
was moving at 73 km/h or
faster, with five per cent of
vehicles doing 143 km/h or
faster.
Similar results came
from readings taken near
Wingham on. County Road
86 east of Wescast in a 70
km/h zone, with half the
traffic moving at 111
km/h or faster, and five
per cent doing 156 km/h
or more.
In a 70 km/h zone on
Road 4 south of Wingham
(Hutton Heights), half the
traffic was going 86 km/h
or faster, with five per
cent going 153 km/h or
faster.
On Road 83 at Airport
Line in a 70 km/h zone,
five per cent of traffic was
doing over 112 km/h; in a
50 km/h zone on Road 84
at St. Joseph, half the traf-
fic was doing over 81 krn/h
and five per cent over 153
km/h; on Road 25 between
Dunlop and Carlow in a 90
km/h zone, half the traffic
was doing at least 114
km/h and five per cent 156
km/h and faster.
Pletch said in his report
to council that the high-
ways department had sev-
eral requests for posted
speed limit reductions last
year, but the study indi-
cates the problem is not
the posted limit but the
actual speed.
