Earth Day a long
standing tradition
By Mike Johnston
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER - The month of April is known for two
things: showers bringing May flowers and Earth
Day on April 22.
Earth Day is celebrated in more than 180 countries
worldwide, by about 500 million people staging
events about enviromental issues.
Locally, many grade schools are getting in on the
action by having garbage pick-up days in school
yards and having litterless lunch days.
Exeter Public School has a unique approach -
"Tote Your Own Trash Day." Students will carry
any garbage they generate around with them as a
visual reminder of how much waste the average per-
son generates.
Earth Day, also known as Earth Week and Earth
Month, was started by Wisconsin Gov. Gaylord
Nelson. It was an idea that evolved over seven
years.
In 1962 Nelson became troubled that the environ-
ment was not an issue in American politics. He flew
to Washington to persuade President John F.
Kennedy to bring attention to the issue by going on a
conservation tour to raise awareness. The tour did-
n't put the issue on the national agenda but it started
the process which would eventually bloom into the
first Earth Day in 1970.
With the help of Harvard University student Denis
Hayes, Nelson organized a demonstration on a
nationwide scale, attracting 20 million demonstra-
tors and thousands of schools and communities
across the United States.
The first international Earth Day was in 1990 and
now it's celebrated annually.
