Lucan Ilderton Jets Senior 'A' champions
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN — The Lucan
Ilderton Jets are the
Senior `A' champions in
their first year back in the
league.
The Jets claimed the title
Saturday with a 3-0 win
over Lucknow to defeat
the Lancers in five games.
The Lancers forced
game five April 15 in
Lucknow with a 5-4 win to
send the series back to
Lucan.
But the Jets made no
mistake Saturday night in
front of their home fans.
Lucan Ilderton took an
early 3-0 lead and never
looked back to clinch the
series and the champi-
onship.
Friday night the Jets
were unable to overcome
having two goals called
back as well as giving up
several power play goals
in the 5-4 loss.
The Jets were down 3-1
after the first period and
4-3 after the second on
goals from Shaun
Fairweather, Greg
Henderson, and Bill Byers.
A goal at the eight
minute mark of the third
period put the Jets back
within sight of the title, but
the Lancers responded
with two and a half min-
utes left in the game for
the win.
Despite outshooting the
home side by a 48-24
mark, and taking the play
to Lucknow in the third,
Lucan was unable to get
another.
Jets general manager
Rob Andrews said it was
the type of night where
everything was close but
just wouldn't go in.
But it was a different
story Saturday night as
the Jets gained an early
lead and never let up on
the way to the 3-0 win.
Matt MacFarlane gave
the Jets the only goal they
would need in the first
period.
Rob Silver and
MacFarlane added some
insurance in the second
before the Jets through a
defensive blanket on
Lucknow to ensure the
win.
The Jets were backed up
by the shutout goaltending
off Marc Williams who
Andrews said was out-
standing, especially when
Lucan Ilderton was killing
off two man advantages
for Lucknow.
Williams stopped all 37
shots fired by the Lancers,
who outshot the Jets 37-
30.
With only 11 skaters for
Lucknow, Andrews said
when the Jets took the
early lead, they were able
to sit back and protect the
lead.
"We're really happy,"
said Andrews. "A champi-
onship is a champi-
onship...it just goes to
show we're probably one
of the most successful first
year teams in the league."
After two years of
assembling the team,
Andrews said what will
happen next season is up
in the air.
"We've had people call-
ing us already, so that
means we've created
some excitement."
With the interest gener-
ated in the team, Andrews
said it would a very com-
petitive camp for next sea-
son.
He added the team has
had great support from
Lucan in its first year.
Andrews said it would
be tough to make changes
after the year the Jets
have had.
"We know a good per-
centage of the guys want
to come back, but there
will be some openings for
some guys next year.
One change he would
like to see is more games
against closer rivals such
as Clinton and Hensall.
"For economic sake, it
just doesn't make sense to
have Georgian Bay coming
in when they just don't
bring a following with
them."
