Bean Festival
OPP are making sure
you buckle up
By Mike Johnston
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
HURON COUNTY — It's safety first this month for
Ontario Provincial Police who have started their 2005
Spring Seatbelt campaign.
It runs from April 16-24. OPP officers, along with
other police services, will be visible on the roads across
the province ensuring motorists are wearing their seat-
belts.
Last year in the OPP jurisdiction, one in four fatally
injured vehicle occupants did not have their seatbelts
on. Many more were seriously injured.
The fine for not wearing a seatbelt is $110 as well as
two demerit points.
Police will also be looking for misused and unused
children's car seats. A properly installed car seat
reduces a child's risk of injury in a crash by up to 75
per cent. In reality, as many as 80 per cent are not
being used correctly according to the Huron OPP.
Parents wanting more information about child seats
can contact the Huron County Health Unit.
Child booster seats will become mandatory this fall
for any child weighing between 18-36 kg (40-80 lbs),
less than 145 cm (4'9") tall and under the age of eight.
Inspector Gary Martin, commander of the Huron OPP
detachment, doesn't forsee much trouble with the new
law.
"Most people are concerned enough about their
child's safety, that they'll comply," he says.
Many of those who don't wear seatbelts are either
young males in their late teens or elderly farmers who
drive trucks and feel a seatbelt is not necessary
because they are only driving a few blocks from home.
