(photo/submitted) Bullying focus at conference By Stephanie Mandziuk TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF VANASTRA — Parents, teachers, social workers and healthcare profes- sionals are some of the groups that can benefit from an upcoming confer- ence: "Families First... Building a Strong Foundation." The two-day event is sponsored by the Huron County Child Abuse Prevention Committee. It's scheduled for May 16 and 17 at Vanastra Christian Reform Church. The keynote speaker is Carl Hiebert who will give a motivational presenta- tion focusing on personal attitude, the importance of reaching beyond bound- aries and why you need to take risks in life. The guest speaker is Dr. Debra Pepler, one of Canada's key researchers on bullying and victimiza- tion. She heads the Canadian Initiative for the prevention of bullying and victimization. Of particular interest to parents will be a commu- nity/family workshop Mon. May 16 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dr. Pepler will focus on parents and the key role they play in address- ing bullying problems. There are numerous workshops, including: per- sonal safety education for children with disabilities, managing stress and anxi- ety, assessing and manag- ing postpartum depres- sion, supporting student success, workplace con- flict resolution, bullying interventions and under- standing sexual abuse trauma.
