ZURICH — Eight years
ago James Livingston's
twin brother Brian
joined the 1st Zurich
Scout Pack and soon
thereafter James fol-
lowed suit.
The Zurich teen is
developmentally
delayed, hearing
impaired and legally
blind, but he would not
let these personal chal-
lenges get in the way of
being a part of the
Scout movement.
Lee Desjardine has
been James' leader
from the get go. He
says, "When he first
started with us he didn't
want to do anything.
Now he's playing
games, going camping
and getting involved."
Desjardine says other
Scouts have learned
compassion and
patience towards others
thanks to James. "He's
taught them a few
things," says
Desjardine, "and they
listen to him when he
comes up with ideas."
Cindy McCracken says
her son was determined
to be part of the group.
"It's made him better,
improved his social
skills and given him
confidence. I think it's
great and I'm very
proud."

When your doctor prescribes an antibiotic for
you, remember to take it until it's all gone. This is
important because when you start an antibiotic,
usually the weakest bacteria are killed first while
the stronger ones need longer exposure to the
drug. Stopping too early may allow these stronger bacteria to
flourish.
This is where bacterial resistance can begin. Those stronger
bacteria can change their structure so that the same antibiotic won't
kill them in the future. This is a very real problem and does add to
health-care costs because more expensive antibiotics may have to
be used.
You may sometimes see caffeine included with some pain
medications... those usually containing A.S.A. It enhances the effect
of the A.S.A. and increases alertness when you are feeling crumby.
A.S.A. products are not used as much for pain relief as they once
were but caffeine is everywhere.
Diarrhea is a symptom of an underlying problem and shouldn't be
treated without knowing the cause. Diarrhea is your body's way of
possibly getting rid of toxins and slowing this process down with an
antidiarrheal medication could slow healing. See your doctor if the
diarrhea continues for more than a day or so.

the Award of Fortitude
from Scouts Canada. It
carries the Governor
General's signature
because she is consid-
ered to be the country's
Chief Scout.
The award is present-
ed to an individual
with"significant contri-
bution to the movement
despite impediments."
It states James has
enthusiastically partici-
pated in Scouting activi-
ties. He has also demon-
strated a strength of
character and shown
determination and dedi-
cation. The citation
continues with the
words, "You are a real
inspiration to youth and
leaders in the Scout
Movement."
James isn't sure why
there's so much fuss
going on. When he saw
his mother arrive for
the ceremony he
repeatedly said, "Mom
what are you doing
here?"
When asked about
Scouts James quickly
replies, "I like to play
dodgeball and at Cub
Camp I like the hot
chocolate."
So far James has
earned 10 badges and is
very proud of his "build
a cub car" badge.
James is a Grade 10
student at South Huron
District High School.
This is his last year as a
Scout because he'll be
turning 18.
His Mom and
Desjardine are hoping
James will stay with the
group as an assistant
leader come fall.
McCracken says, "He
knows the routine like
the back of his hand
and it would be hard for
him not to come. This
makes him part of the
community. I notice the
kids don't treat him any
differently. He's part of
the group and that's
great."
