Exeter Public holds Literacy Night
EXETER — Exeter
Public School hosted a
Family Literacy Night
March 9 to celebrate its
new "share the stories
book collection."
Many new picture books,
novels and magazines
were bought for the school
library with funding pro-
vided by Coca Cola Ltd.
through the ABC CANADA
Literacy Foundation.
With this funding, EPS
was able to buy many
award winning picture
books, beginning chapter
books to support our
young readers, and a vari-
ety of materials to support
students with a range of
reading skills.
Families visited a variety
of stations where they
learned about the impor-
tance of reading. Some
stations included reading
with young children;
games that could be
played with reading and
spelling; reading strategies
and struggling readers
and writers.
Families were enter-
tained by Winkle the
clown, the White Squirrel
and by the Cat in the Hat.
Forty-two lucky families
won fantastic door prizes
donated by the Parent
Association and bought
from Stedmans and
Scholastic. Each student
who attended received a
free book from Scholastic.
Last fall, teachers at
Exeter Public School
applied for and received a
grant from Coca-Cola Ltd.
and the ABC Canada
Literacy Foundation for a
"share the stories book
collection."
The school earned
$1,500 to spend on books
and magazines to enhance
the school's home reading
program and to ensure

there were books available
that all the students can
read.
EPS staff have been busy
researching and shopping
and have bought a num-
ber of high quality hard
cover picture books. Some
new titles include "When
Pigs Fly," "Wild About
Books," "Polar Bear, Polar
Bear," "What Do You
Hear?" and "The
Umbrella."
Teachers also bought a
wide range of beginning
and early chapter books to
support students new to
chapter books, including
the Ricky Ricotta series.
There is a new collection
of Junie B. Jones books, a
set of Magic School Bus
chapter books, and many
new Dolphin Diaries
books. For the intermedi-

The goal, to create "a
world-class system of

The province is review-
