Education workers vote to strike
GUELPH/CNW -
Members of three support
staff bargaining units of
the Ontario Secondary
School Teachers'
Federation, District 18
Upper Grand, joined with
their classroom teacher
and occasional teacher
colleagues who had
already voted in favour of
strike.
The Educational
Assistant and Speech
Pathologist Assistant
Bargaining Unit voted 91
per cent in favour of
strike. The Office Clerical
Technical Bargaining Unit
voted 83 per cent in
favour of strike and the
Professional Student
Support Personnel
Bargaining Unit voted 73
per cent in favour of
strike.
Sylvia Lichti, president of
the Professional Student
Support Personnel bar-
gaining unit (PSSP) said,
"One of the biggest con-
cerns for our members
are the implications of
provincial issues around
funding for PSSP and how
these issues impact on the
services currently provid-
ed in our schools."
Ken Coran, provincial
Vice President and Chair
of the bargaining team
explained that, "Upper
Grand District 18 educa-
tion workers are experi-
encing the same frustra-
tions at the bargaining
table as other teacher and
education workers across
Ontario. The Minister of
Education's mantra is
greater than `peace and
stability' but he must real-
ize that the flawed funding
formula, created by the
Tory government before
them but maintained by
the Liberals is the prob-
lem. This formula under -
funds education and
makes peace and stability
very difficult to deliver."
OSSTF/FEESO, founded
in 1919, has 50,000 mem-
bers across Ontario. They
include public high school
teachers, occasional
teachers, educational
assistants, continuing edu-
cation instructors, psy-
chologists, secretaries,
speech-language patholo-
gists, social workers, plant
support personnel, atten-
dance counsellors, and
many others in education.
