EXETER — The Exeter
Hawks will not be repeat-
ing as OHA Junior D
champions this year after
being eliminated by the
Mitchell Hawks in six
games.
Exeter was eliminated
Saturday night
in Mitchell in a
3-2 double
overtime loss,
after losing
game five
Friday night in
Exeter 6-1.
Exeter coach
Derek Macnair
stated, "It's
pretty hard to win when
you don't show up to one
of the games. We were not
even ready to play game
five and the outcome of
the game showed it."
Exeter was looking for
the first goal of the game
Friday night but it was
Mitchell taking the lead
midway through the first.
The visitors took over in
the second adding two
more for a 3-0 lead.
Despite Exeter outshoot-
ing Mitchell in the second
by a 19-7 mark, they were
unable to get anything
past Mitchell goalie Clark
Wyatt.
"A lot of those shots
came from in tight, and
you can't beat those
goalies from in tight,
they're too big," said
Macnair.
The visitors added three
more in the third before
Justin
Young
cracked the
shutout bid
in the last
minute to
make it a 6-
1 final.
Saturday
night
Mitchell was
first on the board again.
With a 2-1 lead late in
the dying second of the
game, it looked like
Mitchell was on its way to
the next round, but Exeter
wasn't done.
Jamie Wolfe scored with
one second left on the
clock to tie it 2-2.
But after rallying to tie,
Exeter had nothing left in
the overtime, with Mitchell
outshooting them 11-2 in
the extra periods.
After scoring what they
thought was the overtime
"We lost the series
because the other
team worked harder
than we did:'
EXETER HAWK COACH
DEREK MACNAIR
winner, only to have it dis-
allowed, Mitchell made no
mistake in the second
overtime, with Perry
Francis ending the Hawks
season.
Macnair said while some
of the team veterans
showed leadership Friday
night, "they didn't show it
for 60 minutes.
"How you can not get up
for a game that is a crucial
game in a series, is
beyond me."
"We didn't want to hit
anybody, we didn't want
to skate and we were
scared to get hit.
"It was night and day
from Friday night to
Saturday...if we played
like that Friday night in
our building, we would
have won the game."
Of his future with the
team, Macnair said while
he would like to come
back, it is up to the team.
One thing Macnair said
he would like to do would
be to have a spring or late
summer training camp
just for local players.
"We'll be talking in the
next couple of weeks and
if they want me back then
fine, if they don't then so
be it."
