(photo/submitted) EXETER - The Exeter Figure Skating Club (EFSC) is inviting all past members, coaches and executive to attend a spe- cial anniversary edition of their annual carnival `Let's Celebrate'. The 2004-2005 season marks a milestone which is the club's 50th anniver- sary. It is believed organized figure skating lessons began in the fall of 1954 with more formal recogni- tion occurring in November 1955. Local residents Wilma Brintnell, Derry Boyle and Lois Snell were instrumen- tal in creating the E.F.S.C. The first coach was Peter Firstbrook instruct- ing students Nancy Boyle (Addison), Louise Hockey (Pincombe), Sandra Walper (Pollen) and Janice Hamilton (Baker). E.F.S.0 became a mem- ber of the Canadian Figure Skating Association, now Skate Canada, in 1963. Lessons were held in the Exeter Arena until its demolition in 1976. The 1977-78 season was the first spent at the Rec Centre. Precision skating, now synchronized skating, began in 1980 with one team. There are now four syn- chro teams competing and this season marks a spe- cial year for synchro as it has existed in some form for the past 25 years and is continuing to grow, The club has a member- ship of 140 skaters which includes canskate, junior, senior, adult and synchro members. The annual carnival, the highlight of every year since the first `Circus on Ice' (1955-56) will be held March 19 at 6:30 p.m. The carnival will feature guest skater Chris Mabee who placed fifth in the senior mens at the Skate Canada Championships recently in London.
