Exeter Jr. D. Hawks 6-4 win ties series
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — The Exeter Hawks will
need a win at home this weekend to
advance past the Mitchell Hawks in the
first round of the playoffs.
Exeter evened the series against
Mitchell at two games apiece Sunday
night after dropping a 3-2 decision
Friday night at home.
The series will resume Friday night
in Exeter at 8:30 p.m. with game six in
Mitchell March 5 at 8 p.m. Game seven
if necessary will be in Exeter Sunday
at 7:30 p.m.
Exeter coach said Derek Macnair
said Exeter seemed to be playing dif-
ferently on the road then it was at
home.
"When we're in our rink, we don't
seem to generate enough shots from
the outside and get traffic in front of
him. We tend to generate our shots in
close against him and that's why when
we outshoot them 16-5 Friday night,
we're not scoring."
Macnair added that all four power
play goals Exeter scored Sunday night
were from the outside with traffic in
front of Mitchell goalie Andrew Daub.
Eighteen seconds was the difference
Friday night.
It was all that was required for
Mitchell to take the lead, controlling
the puck in the Exeter zone off the
opening faceoff before Patrick McClure
beat Exeter goalie Cam Becker for a 1-
O lead.
A power play marker by Chad Deman
evened the score but Mitchell took the
lead back before the period was over
with McClure's second of the period.
Another power play goal by Jason
Stuckless put Exeter back on even
terms, but once again Mitchell
responded, executing a two on one,
with Dan Graul sliding a pass over to
Jeff Walt who made it a 3-2 game.
Despite outshooting the visitors in the
third by a 16-5 margin and overall by
40-28, Exeter couldn't get anymore
past Daub.
But it was a different story Sunday
night as Exeter pumped six goals in,
four on the power play for a 6-4 win to
even the series.
Scott Davies put Exeter on the board
midway through the period but
Mitchell responded with two goals in
the last four minutes of the period to
take a 2-1 lead.
But it was Exeter taking control in
the second period, after Walt had
made it 3-1, with two from Stuckless
and another from Justin Knee for a 4-3
Exeter lead.
Exeter kept the pressure on in the
third, with a second power play mark-
er from Stuckless to complete his hat
trick and an insurance marker from
Justin Young to seal the 6-4 win.
Knee had three assists to go along
with his goal, with single points from
Davies, Nesbitt, Jamie Wolfe, Nathan
Regier and Deman.
Exeter outshot Mitchell by a 40-27
margin and went four for six with the
man advantage, killing off all but one
of seven Mitchell power plays.
While Macnair said he was happy
with the way the team is playing on the
road, he said the Hawks can play bet-
ter at home.
"We're allowing them to walk out
from behind the net, and they can
pitch a tent there...we have to stop
that. and for the most part, we did that
last night. For some reason, we can't
do that in Exeter.
"We've battled back and tied up the
series in their rink and know it's a two
out of three...we definitely gotta come
out hard Friday night. The team that
scores the first goal in every game has
won."

HENSALL — The
Hensall Sherwoods will be
looking to even their series
against Clinton when they
visit the Radars Friday
night for game four with
the Sherwoods down 2-1.
The Sherwoods opened
the series at home Feb. 23
and Sean McCann gave
the visitors an early lead
but Clinton replied just 35
seconds later from Curt
Yost.
A pair of goals from
Scott Henderson and Mark
Anderson just two minutes
apart put the Radars up 3-
1 before McCann's short-
handed marker cut the
lead in half.
But the Radars struck
again late in the period
with two more from Kyle
Whitfield and Anderson
for a 5-2 lead going into
the third period.
Hensall got close with a
pair of quick goals in the
third from Jeremy
VanBergen and Adam
McCann but it was all they
could get in the 5-4 loss.
Friday night in Clinton, it
was Sean McCann again
putting the Sherwoods on
the board early, with Chris
Kennedy putting them up
by two on the power play.
Clinton responded before
the period was over from
Steve Mclnally but it was
Hensall pulling away with
two more in the second
from Jarrett Jefferey and
Jeff MacLean..
Kyle Whitfield added a
third period goal for the
Radars but the Sherwoods
evened the series with a 4-
2 win.
Game three went in
Hensall Saturday night
and JR Davies had the
lone goal of the first period
but Clinton struck for a
pair late in the second
from Whitfield and Matt
Anderson.
It was all Clinton in the
third as they took control
with three goals in seven
minutes from Scott
Henderson, Anderson and
Yost fora 5-1 win and a 2-
1 lead in the series.
