Students asks for standardized
recycling throughout schools
By Stew Slater
SPECIAL TO THE T -A
A Grade 9 member of
the Stratford Central
Secondary School (SCSS)
Environment Club has
given a letter to trustees
and senior staff of the
Avon Maitland District
School Board, requesting
the implementation of a
standardized recycling
system throughout its
schools.
11There are many other
students I know of who
are inclined to lessen
their negative environ-
mental impact on our
world, yet they have nei-
ther the time nor the
resources," wrote Kelsey
Cunningham, who attend-
ed the boards regular
meeting Tuesday, Feb. 22.
But if a York University -
created program called
"Ecoschools" were to be
instituted by the board,
she argued, 11100 per cent
of the student body. .
.would at least possess an
awareness of these issues
and of the solutions."
Cunningham was accom-
panied by the staff liaison
for the Stratford sec-
ondary schools
Environment Club, Kerry
McManus.
The SCSS teacher -librar-
ian called on the board to
"adopt a waste manage-
ment strategy" that is in
keeping with the environ-
mental stewardship por-
tion of Ontario's curricu-
lum, and with the provin-
cial governments recycling
goals for all government
departments.
Also contributing was
Carolyn Morris, an occa-
sional teacher with the
board, who said she
encounters a diverse
range of recycling
approaches as she moves
from one school to anoth-
er, or between different
classrooms within a
school.
"There is quite an incon-
sistency in recycling
throughout the school
board," Morris explained.
"Quite a few classrooms
have (recycling) bins but
there is no consistency to
it."
There is also inconsisten-
cy in terms of who is
responsible for coordinat-
ing the recycling effort,
she added.
Stratford trustee Doug
Pratley wondered why stu-
dents shouldn't be
responsible.
Morris responded that, if
environmental steward-
ship is part of the educa-
tional curriculum, "the
best way to show it with
our students is through
example.11
McManus agreed. She
reminded Pratley that
communities don't expect
only members of environ-
mental groups to do every-
one's recycling, so it
shouldn't be left just to
environmentally conscious
students and staff to coor-
dinate recycling in the
schools.
Trustees approved a
motion, brought forward
by South Huron represen-
tative Randy Wagler, to
refer the matter to the
Policy Committee.
