Grade 1/2 students at Usborne Central School received an interesting lesson in spelling last week during a marriage of the letters "Q" and "U." The marriage showed
the students how the two letters are always together.Amanda Hodgert represented the letter "Q," while Zachary Ryan was the letter "U." At right, the happy couple

Responsibility is key for all alcohol servers

TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — The days of
serving alcohol to any-
one at any time are long
gone, replaced by strict
protocols and proce-
dures initiated by the
provincial government.
According to the
Alcohol and Gaming
Commission of Ontario,
all managers, servers of
alcohol and security staff
must hold Smart Serve
certificates. Even the
refreshment cart opera-
tor at your local golf
course needs Smart
Serve before handing
over that icy, cold beer.
Smart Serve trains
people to know their
obligations and responsi-
bilities under the law
when it comes to serving
alcohol. Participants
learn proactive
approaches to prevent-
ing alcohol-related prob-
lems. They're given
advice on how to deal
with aggressive cus-
tomers and they're
trained to recognize
when someone has had
too much to drink.
Licensees can also ben-
efit in a number of ways
by reducing their risk of
liability, getting a possi-
ble cut in their insurance
and promoting public
safety.
Alcohol is served at
about 150 functions
annually at the South
Huron Rec Centre. In
1996 Smart Serve was
adopted as a standard
protocol. Now the cen-
tre finds itself sponsor-
ing Smart Serve courses
at least eight times a
year as a community
service. The $30 fee per
person covers the basic
cost.
The course itself takes
two to three hours.
Participants watch a
video, complete a work-
book and then take a
test. With a passing
grade of 80 per cent or
more you get a wallet
size certificate and lapel
pin. If you fail, you have
one chance to take the
test again, no charge.
