His idea was that businessmen would get together in a spirit of cama- raderie to enjoy each other's company and enlarge their circle of business and profes- sional acquaintances. This group of four originals grew to five and this was the start of the Rotary Club of Chicago; this quickly grew to 30 mem- bers. The meetings initially rotated around the various offices of the members. Thus the term "Rotary " was spawned. Today there are over 1.2 mil- lion Rotarians worldwide, from 31,939 clubs in 166 countries. The motto "Service above self" clearly illustrates the central theme of the Rotary \`\\ movement and every Rotary club is expected to perform in four "avenues of service" annually. These avenues are: Club Service (service within one's club), Community Service, International Service and Vocational Service (serv- ing through one's business or profession in areas such as career guidance and training programs for young people). The application of the Rotary "Four Way Test" by each member is the way in which they ensure they closely fol- low the beliefs of Rotary International. 1) Is it the truth? 2) Is it fair to all con- cerned? 3) Will it build goodwill and better friendship? 4) Will it be beneficial to all concerned? On February 23rd 2005 Rotary International cele- brates its centennial. There will be an international confer- ence in Chicago (the birth- place of Rotary) in June and other commemorative events will be held all over the world. GRAND BEND ROTARY CLUB - HISTORY OF ACTIVITIES The Rotary Club of Grand Bend chartered May 3rd 1991 has a present membership of 38 and is engaged annually in a series of fundraising activi- ties to enable it to continue in the various areas of service required by Rotary International. In addition to the main goal of fostering goodwill and fellowship within its own members the club also is required to serve in the areas of vocational, commu- nity and international services. The efforts of the club are directed towards these goals. The club has donated an average of $40,000 or more annually to local and international projects.
