Exeter Hawks end year
edged 4-3 by Mitchell
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
MITCHELL — The
Exeter Hawks came up
short against Mitchell
Dec. 29 despite taking
a 2-0 early lead.
But the home team
struck back with a pair
of goals before
the period was
over and eventu-
ally came away
with a 4-3 win.
The loss gives
the Hawks a 15-
10-2-1 record
and 33 points
with Mitchell sit-
ting just behind
at 30 points and
a game in hand.
Exeter had a 2-
0 lead just three min-
utes into the game on
goals by Justin LaPorte
and Jason Stuckless,
but Mitchell replied
with two before the
period was over and
two more in the second.
Exeter coach Derek
Macnair said he was
happy with the quick
start the team had
since it was something
the Hawks hadn't been
doing and he was try-
ing to get it across to
the team.
"But we had a couple
of lapses after that and
we came up on the
short end of the stick."
"We came out work-
ing hard and then had
a little lull in the game.
We outshot them 14-4
in the third period so
that shows how
well we played
in the third
period."
Chad Deman
cut the lead to
one goal in the
last two min-
utes of the third
period but it
was all Exeter
could get as
Mitchell hung
on for the 4-3
Ja

win.
Getting assists
in the loss were
Dan Moir,
Justin Young,
Joe Nesbitt,
Justin Hayter,
Stuckless and
Scott Davies.
Despite the
loss, Macnair
said he was
happy with the
play of some of
the older play-
ers and the leaders
the team.
"It's just a matter of
the rest of the team fol-
lowing the leaders and
doing what they're sup-
posed to be doing."
Exeter outshot
Mitchell by a 27-25
mark with no power
play chances for the
visitors and only one
for Mitchell.
With 12 games left in
the schedule, Macnair
said the two games this
weekend are big for the
Hawks. "I'd like to fin-
ish them 10-2 if possi-
ble."
Macnair added the
Hawks are looking at
players to add before
the deadline Jan. 10
with the idea of adding
a defenceman with
some size.
"Somebody
that can scare
the opposition
without even
doing any-
thing...the thing
I'm trying to get
across to these
guys is people
are coming into
your building.
Make them
scared before
they even hit the ice."
