TOM PROUT ORGANIZATION: General manager, Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority. 2005 WILL BE A YEAR OF: Any year we do positive projects for the environment and water quality is a good year. The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) is your watershed environmental partner, delivering services and helping municipali- ties, community groups and landowners with conser- vation projects. Some of you will know the ABCA because of our participation in the new trail (good community support, keep it up). Others will know the ABCA for its private landowner extension services such as tree planting and soil erosion control which help improve our water quality. Or perhaps you par- ticipated in our education programs. In 2005, the ABCA will continue providing these ser- vices as well as something new, exciting and impor- tant to all of us. In 2005 all of you will have an opportunity to know the ABCA for its role in Source Water Protection Planning. Conservation authorities have been given the responsibility of co-ordinating our collective efforts to develop a plan and an implementation strategy to improve and protect our sources of drinking water. There are three key sources of water: surface water such as Lake Huron, shallow wells and deep bedrock wells that we need to protect. Source Water Protection is an exciting new project from which we can learn what to do as individuals and as communities to ensure our sources of drinking water remain plentiful and good quality for present and future generations.
