The Exeter Times -Advocate surveyed
prominent members in our
community asking for their forecast of
2005.Will it be a year of
development, change or challenges TERESA
or will it be a year of cutbacks, hard deci- ONDREJICKA
sions or hard work? -PRONCHUK
ORGANIZATION:
Chairman, Ausable
Bayfield Conservation
Authority.
2005 WILL BE A YEAR
OF: Source water protec-
tion.
WHY? In light of the
Walkerton tragedy the
provincial government has
recently announced it will
be providing $13 million to
assist conservation author-
ities and their partners to
protect drinking water.
THE COMING YEAR'S
CHALLENGES
AND HOW TO MEET
THEM?: The challenge will
be to get the job done. It
makes good fiscal and
environmental sense to
protect sources of drinking
water in our watersheds.
This includes lakes, rivers,
streams and groundwater
sources. While many of us
have access to drinking
water from municipal sys-
tems, treating this water is
more expensive than pro-
tecting it in the first place.
Conservation authorities
have a proven track
record of managing water
quality and quantity so it is
no surprise we are the
group chosen to develop
the source protection
plans with the assistance
of the watershed commu-
nity.
ADDITIONAL COM-
MENTS: The ABCA staff is
an incredible group of
people who are both dedi-
cated and hard working.
Their job is a way of life
and a true commitment to
the preservation of the
watershed we live in. Take
a minute to say thanks
when you see these people
or better yet, take a stroll
along the MacNaughton-
Morrison Trail and stop in
at the office.

Happy New Year! The start of the new year often
motivates us to start a new lifestyle. We want to
exercise more, eat more sensibly, drink less
alcohol and sleep more. All these are very valid
goals but don't make changes all at once. Make them slowly and if
you are embarking on a new exercise program, check with your
doctor first so you don't aggravate an existing medical problem.
Glaucoma patients need eye drops to keep pressure down within
the eye. The doses are usually once or twice daily. Missing doses
could cause the pressure to rise. So be compliant with your doctor's
orders. Associate the eye drops with some other activity you do at
the same time every day. It helps you remember.
Some eye drops sting slightly when they are put in the eye. It isn't
usually the drug that causes this but rather the preservatives used
in the solution to keep it from becoming contaminated. The
discomfort usually passes quickly.
Another good New Year idea is to learn more about your
medications. Make a list of them including any non-prescription or
herbal medications and our pharmacists can give you some insight
into their use and misuse. Your medications may be causing a
problem and you don't know it. We'd be glad to help.
