Three percent raises
for council and staff
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
SOUTH HURON — Members of council gave them-
selves and municipal staff a three per cent raise
Monday night.
The raise to staff was adopted by council in August,
while council decided Monday night to give itself a
similar raise. The raises became effective Monday.
Raises are also slated for staff in 2006 and 2007, at
2.5 per cent each year.
Council agreed that, as is county council's policy,
councillors should get raises when staff does. As
Coun. Ken Oke explained, if council gets small annu-
al raises to cover inflation, it eliminates the large
raises every few years.
Members of council are paid through a combina-
tion of a yearly salary and per meeting. Both figures
went up three per cent.
In the end, the raises to council means the mayor's
annual salary will increase from the current $8,300
to $8,550, while the deputy mayor's will increase
from $6,600 to $6,800. Councillors will make
$5,150, up from the current $5,000.
In addition, council got rid of the minimum $60 for
meetings less than two hours. Now, each councillor
will be paid a minimum of $103 for every meeting
four hours in length or less. For meetings greater
than four hours, councillors will be paid $180.25,
and will be able to receive a maximum of $231.75
per day in meeting payments.
There was also much discussion over whether or
not members of council should be allowed an
increase on their $2,000 annual allowance for con-
vention expenses. Deputy Mayor Dave Urlin said the
mayor's allowance should go up because the mayor
should be able to attend more conventions.
Council decided not to increase its convention
allowance, but will consider allowing councillors to
go over the limit if there is still money left over in the
convention allowance budget. If, for example, one
councillor has money left over in his allowance that
he is not going to use, it could be used by another
member of council to help pay to attend a conven-
tion.
As mayor, Rob Morley is also allowed $2,000 in
convention expenses by Huron County council.
Because of this, he estimated he only used about half
his South Huron convention allowance last year.
In other council notes:
Enumeration needed
Morley is anxious for South Huron to have an
updated enumeration of its eligible voters because it
risks losing one of its three representatives on coun-
ty council.
When South Huron went ahead with the vote by
mail process in the last municipal election, it saw its
enumeration go down because when packages were
