Hawks edged at home by Stars
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — The Exeter
Hawks had a tough week-
end, dropping a 2-1 game
at home Friday night
against North Middlesex,
before coming away with
a 6-6 tie Saturday night in
West Lorne after leading
6-4 with five minutes left
in the game.
The Hawks now have a
13-7-2-1 record for 29
points, six back of Lucan
which leads the confer-
ence and is tied for first
overall with 35 points.
Friday night, the Hawks
had a territorial edge in
play in the first period, but
were unable put to any-
thing past Stars goalie
Brad Vanmassenhoven
leaving it scoreless after
one period.
Exeter goalie Justin
Hayter kept it scoreless in
the second, stopping a two
on one that seemed to give
the Hawks a lift.
They quickly took advan-
tage, with Josh Liddle
beating Vanmassenhoven
for a 1-0 lead, assisted by
Joe Nesbitt.
But the Stars replied
minutes later as Matt
Bork's shot squeezed past
Hayter and they took the
lead before the period was
over as Bryan Oosterhuis
deflected a point shot over
Hayter for a power play
marker.
The Hawks took the
game to the Stars in the
third but couldn't put any
more past
Vanmassenhoven, despite
several chances.
Exeter outshot the Stars
41-26 and bounced four
more off goal posts.
The Hawks went zero for
four on the power play
and gave up one power
play goal on six North
Middlesex power plays.
Exeter coach Derek
Macnair said although
they played only 20 min-
utes and didn't deserve to
win, the Hawks had their
chances in the third.
"In the third period, we
were just gripping it a lit -

tle to tight...you just have
to gain your composure,
don't press for it and let it
happen."
In West Lorne Saturday
night, neither team was
able to get on the board in
the first period, but com-
bined for eight goals in the
second.
The Hawks got goals
from Justin LaPorte,
Nesbitt, Liddle and Tony
Regier.
Tied 4-4 going into the
third, the Hawks took a 6-
4 lead on goals from Chad
deman and Jason
Stuckless but the lead
wouldn't hold up.
The Lakers tied it with
three seconds left to force
an overtime.
Exeter went three for
seven with the man
advantage and a short-
handed goal, while West
Lorne converted two of its
four chances.
Jeff Smale and Paul
Denomme each had a pair
of assists, with singles
from Scott Davies, Deman,
Regier, LaPorte, Liddle
and Jamie Wolfe.
Macnair said the team
had a better effort against
the Lakers, although he
wasn't happy the Hawks
gave up a pair of two -goal
leads.
"When you score a goal
to go up by one or two
goals, the next shift is
important and you have to
keep the pressure on."
Matt Vlemmix will be
missing from the Hawks
lineup for the next three
weeks with a sore shoul-
