Christmas potluck supper and flower show
KIRKTON — All the sights, sounds
and smells of Christmas permeated the
room, as the Kirkton Horticultural
Society opened the doors of the
Kirkton-Woodham Community Centre
for their annual Christmas potluck sup-
per meeting and flower show Dec. 7 at
6 p.m.
Following a delicious supper, the
audience enjoyed a sing -a -long of sea-
sonal favourites, led by Pat Harlton
and Lynda Hodgins and accompanied
by Marjorie Johns.
After several drawings for the beauti-
ful poinsettia table centrepieces, fea-
tured speaker Rowena Martin was
introduced.
Martin is a design judge and a mem-
ber of the Kitchener/Waterloo garden
club. She has presented hundreds of
classes and demonstrated throughout
Southern Ontario. Using materials one
would find around the home, Martin
created numerous seasonal designs,
each with its own creative twist. There
were creations for every room of the
house, ranging from a miniature
Christmas tree -shaped swag to a gold-
en curly willow party design for the
table. Imagination and a wonderful
sense of humour were part of this live-
ly presentation.
Show co -coordinator, Gertrude Willis
then introduced Phyllis O'Neil, judge
for the evening's flower show competi-
tion. O'Neil commended the partici-
pants for their beautiful work, and
gave many helpful design tips that
might be applied in further shows. All
enjoyed viewing the plants and flowers
and many visitors suggested they
would be trying some of the ideas for
their own Christmas decorating.
The results for this show were then
announced with the Quadro
Communications Special for Best
Design awarded to Gertrude Willis, and
the Quadro Communications Special
for Most Points in show earned by
Diane Herniman. Overall winners for
all three shows held during the year
were awarded to Sandra Kemp 1st
place; Elaine Stephen 2nd place and
Gertrude Willis 3rd place.
President Elaine Stephen then con-
ducted the annual meeting with the
secretary's report, and activity report
given by secretary Jean Copeland, and
the treasurer's report presented by
treasurer Marian Jacques.
After District 10 representative, Anna
Petersen conducted the installation of
the Kirkton Horticultural Society offi-
cers, everyone enjoyed further time to
view the flower show entries and to
discuss ideas for Christmas decorating
with live materials.
Stephen concluded the meeting with
Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas
and Happy New Year, saying she
would look forward to seeing everyone
at the next meeting on Tuesday, May 3,
2005.
